Ribosomes have a strange protein modification in a universally-conserved protein uS11. This modification, isoaspartate, is also conserved in nearly all forms of life. We originally found this modification using cryo-EM, but had no idea how it was formed. 1/ elifesciences.org/articles/60482

This project started with confusion 🤔 www.nature.com/articles/s41... Loss of LUBAC or OTULIN causes severe inflammatory disease. But patients also show clear metabolic defects. Neither LUBAC nor OTULIN had been linked to metabolic regulation. So where do these metabolic manifestations come from?

This is the first example I've seen of a university trying to mobilize constituents to stand up against Trump threats. There's been a lot of "wHaT eLsE CaN AdMiNiStRaToRs Do?" in The Discourse when this is exactly the thing they haven't been doing. Good for UCLA for trying. Others should follow.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

The courts *should* put an immediate and unequivocal halt to all use of the CECOT prison in El Salvador, with or without due process. They may not do that. But the *people* of the US still can. Don't lose of sight of this atrocity amidst the other outrages. Make this a key focus of resistance.
