I’ve been rewatching the X-Files monster of the week episodes and it’s great for nostalgia and PNW scenery and as blueprint of where we went off the rails conspiracy-wise but man — them agents straight-up murder at least one person in basically every episode.

I know y’all are mad abt Google Maps but tbh the changes are in line w longstanding global naming policy (I worked there for 8 years) & names come from the gov database. Can debate if they should override it, but would be huge departure from policy & set a bad precedent blog.google/products-and...

The kitchen fires burned late, heating the ovens as extra cakes, flans, and pies were baked golden. Bands of moles plundered the orchard, wheeled great cheeses from the storerooms, and lugged forward big barrels of spiced nettle ale and oat an' barley cordial from the cellars.

investigation was originally developed for The New York Times, where it underwent eight months of editing, multiple rounds of fact-checking, and independent replication of the underlying methodology. The piece had a scheduled publication date when requests for comment were sent. It was only after the Times reached out to the subjects of the investigation for routine comment that the Elias Law Group, representing the DCCC and DSCC, sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding the paper not publish. Although the paper's fact-checkers and legal department later cleared the piece before sending out a second round of requests for comment, the Times ultimately decided to kill the piece.3:27
a4democracy.substack.com
The piece was subsequently slated for publication at The Bulwark, where it underwent additional fact-checking, data verification, and legal review. When requests for comment were sent to the subjects of the investigation, lawyers representing the Progressive Turnout Project and Mothership Strategies likewise responded with legal letters demanding that the article not run.
From there, publication was repeatedly delayed. The piece cleared successive rounds of legal review. When I asked for a committed publication date after months of delay, The Bulwark conditioned publication on my accepting an extensive rewrite prepared by its editors that, in my assessment, removed key empirical findings without explanation, introduced claims contradicted by the data and fact-checking record, and presented the subjects' legal defenses as my own conclusions. When I declined to publish under those terms, the piece was released back to me.

A succinct verdict on the persecution of the poor young academic who just died by suicide. Plagiarism is common. Persecution of the kind he endured is uncommon, aka selectively applied. The reason why he was targeted seems as clear as it is ugly.

it does actually sound like taylor farms and the white house teamed up to try and blame taco bell for the outbreak. unprecedented corruption
Within hours, the White House agreed the patient surveys painted a clear picture, the people said. In an internal call, the White House aides approved statements from the public health agencies for public release — though they still only identified Taco Bell as linked to the outbreak, without naming Taylor Farms specifically.
Taco Bell moved first, releasing a statement. While it did not explicitly name Taylor Farms it said it believed "public health is a shared responsibility among restaurants, their suppliers, and authorities, and we are proud to have consistently acted quickly and proactively to protect our guests."
The agency updates on the outbreak were finally posted after 10 p.m. New York time - hours behind schedule - and also omitted directly naming Taylor Farms or saying if the company would recall products.
