We should have known, of course. We might have looked like the IRA on a mission, but left to their own devices the police at the checkpoints had just reverted to their default position. They were only stopping black people.

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

Plenty of other reasons to hate AI: It's making people stupider. The Trump/Musk slop art. It's destroying journalism. It's environmentally damaging. The attempts to force it on us are part of a larger anti-democracy project. But deadly robot armies ain't it.

Anyway, I know that the "we're all going to die by a robot army" hype is really fun for folks, and so that's going to have way more power than the "nah, dawg, that's dumb" skepticism. That's my cross to bear. But please do consider the possibility it's just very silly hype.

Today, the anniversary (one way or another) of three deaths: one that wasn’t supposed to happen, because Henry II, Count of Champagne and King of Jerusalem, was only 31, but on this day in 1197 had a slight mishap with a window...
Excerpt from Steven Runciman’s A History of the Crusades, Volume Three: On 10 September 1197 his troops assembled in the palace courtyard; and Henry reviewed them from the window of an upper gallery. At that moment envoys from the Pisan colony entered the room. Henry turned to greet them, then, forgetting where he was, stepped backward through the open window. His little dwarf, Scarlet, was standing by him and grabbed at his clothes. But Henry was a heavy man and Scarlet very light. They crashed together on to the pavement below and were killed."

Damning silence from Labour on their Napoleon III exhumation policy
Tom Harwood tweets:

BREAK: Nigel Farage says under a Reform government the body of Napoleon III could be returned from England to France.
The last French emperor's final resting place is in The Imperial Crypt at St Michael's Abbey in Farnborough.
He died in exile in England in 1873 following the fall of the Second Empire. His body was never returned to France because they didn't want it, and due to his wife's wishes. She was later buried alongside him.

Painted in 1910, just a year before his tragic death at the age of thirty-six, Hishida Shunsō’s Kuro Neko (Black Cat) stands as a towering masterpiece of modern Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Positioned near the base of a vertical hanging scroll, a jet-black cat crouches with quiet, muscular tension, its glowing yellow-green eyes locked onto the viewer with remarkable intensity. Suspended above the feline, slender branches bow under the weight of ripe persimmons, their warm ochre globes and soft gray-green leaves drooping with seasonal gravity against the luminous, bare silk ground. Shunsō’s execution of the cat’s fur is a technical tour de force: rather than defining the body with sharp contour lines, he applied ultra-fine, painstaking brushstrokes over soft ink gradations, creating a delicate, velvety halo around the form that conveys both tactile depth and the subtle impression of breathing life.

The work embodies Shunsō’s mature stylistic synthesis, bridging classical Japanese decorative traditions with mōrōtai ("hazy" or "vague style")—a revolutionary painting technique he developed alongside Yokoyama Taikan under the guidance of art theorist Okakura Tenshin. Emerging in the late Meiji period, mōrōtai abandoned traditional black ink outlines (sh線/shisen) in favor of soft color washes and tonal shading, seeking to capture light, atmosphere, and volume in response to Western impressionism and realism. In Black Cat, Shunsō brings this technique to its highest expression, contrasting the soft, lineless volume of the cat with precise, delicate line work along the leaf veins and fruit calyxes. The composition depends heavily on yohaku (meaningful negative space), using the quiet expanse of raw silk to evoke the stillness of a crisp autumn afternoon.

Created while Shunsō suffered from severe kidney disease and the heartbreaking threat of total blindness, the painting carries a poignant psychological resonance. The cat’s enigmatic presence—poised between domestic tranquility and wild alertness—anchors the visual field with an arresting, timeless quietude.
