What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

"Sign up for SCOTUSblog Plus so that Sarah Isgur can text you about the Supreme Court" should be a legally actionable threat
Sep 29, 2026

Dear Reader,

As you may know, we have introduced SCOTUSblog Plus, and I want you in on the ground floor. This means more analysis, more context, more behind-the-scenes reporting about how the Court works and why its decisions matter.

If you’re reading this, you’re one of the people who actually cares whether the Court’s reasoning holds up, not just whether you liked the outcome. And as a Plus member, you'll receive our newsletter, SCOTUStoday, every weekday; exclusive deep dives into the Court's work; behind-the-scenes insights from the reporters and experts covering every argument and opinion; original data and statistics you won't find anywhere else; and – my favorite part – text alerts when major decisions, orders, and opinion assignments are released.

Through October 9, we're offering a discounted Founding Membership. You'll save money in the long run, and you'll be helping us get this thing off the ground.

One more reason to sign up today: SCOTUSblog is hosting its first-ever live AMA on Monday, October 5, the first day of the new term, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with Amy Howe, Zach Shemtob, and me. We will be taking your questions about the Court and what we’re likely to see this upcoming term. Founding members will receive the invite and link.

Subscribe to Plus

Thanks again for reading, for caring about the Court, and for making SCOTUSblog possible. I hope you'll join us.

Best,
Sarah Isgur

To self-promote, I think high-decoupling is terrible. It means falling for blatant figleaves and ignoring blatant dogwhistles. The example there imagines Sam Harris saying that his beliefs about intelligence weren't racist because he said they aren't about race. It is an invitation to be a mark.

Whenever you see a pollster or consultant give a take like this, it’s always worth following the money. In this case, Emanuel has paid Anzalone’s firm nearly $300k (maybe more but that’s what I found so far). A consultant class is devouring the Dem Party www.elections.il.gov/CampaignDisc...

Underestimate @RahmEmanuel at your own risk.
He knows how to win. He knows how to fight.
And he knows how to message.
And no one will out work him. Regardless of whether he wins the Democratic nomination in 2028 he will make an impact on the race. You can be sure of that. Don't take your eyes off of him. At the minimum, learn from him.

and like Andy, the idea of giving myself even more homework to double check and recheck things I could do for myself AND WHICH GIVE ME VITAL CONTEXTS AND MOMENTUM give me hives. I don't find AI useful in my workplace bc it divorces tasks from contexts & i have to do MORE work to keep up.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.
