I see these huge structures at Leith docks from many locations across Edinburgh. I love them, lots of other people do too. Would our emotional responses would be different if, instead of being the bases of offshore wind turbines, they were, say, parts of weapons systems or nuclear power plants?
Foreground: beach at low tide.
Centre: huge yellow tripod/pylon-like structures standing on industrial land.
Background: blue sky.

One of my co-authors has posted a nice animation showing propagation of the #Storegga #tsunami on the palaeobathymetry 8000 BP (left) and the present day North Sea (right). The tsunami loses its power as the sea becomes shallow and the wave diminishes towards the coast of DK/DE. lnkd.in/p/eJVXCyWB

Our new paper out now in QSA models the Storegga tusnami wave using more realistic palaeobathymetry based on the most recent glacio-isostatic modelling outputs for the North Sea, and shows that significant wave propagation south of Dogger Bank is extremely unlikely.

Thing is, the statement i want to cite is broad, "More research is needed on the maximum ice sheet limit south of Dogger Bank", which is what the outcome of the meeting was, but how do I cite that when I can't even find reference to the meeting online anywhere any more?!

Can you cite the outcomes of a discussion meeting in a peer-reviewed paper? I want to cite some future research directions that were discussed in a Southern North Sea glaciation meetin in Durham last year as it's pertinent to the paper. Any tipson how to do so greatly appreciated!

AI will not help tackle climate change. The "innovations" AI produces will not pay back the carbon emitted. Particularly since most people don't use AI for climate research. And because we *know* what to do to stop climate change, we just aren't doing it.

TFW you barely managed to fall asleep and then the alarm goes off
The picture shows a scene from a chronicle made in 1484/85:
A man with a mitra sits in a bed with folded hands, eyes towards heaven and a big gash in his forehead. Next to him is a guy grabbing his wrist and holding a big, cleaver-like sword in the other hand, poised for another strike - and his head looks like an alarm clock

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

Bikes are an economic disaster. The only things I bought for my bike in the past year were brake pads. At this rate, how are corporations going to make money? How are they going to buy politicians? How will I ever go into debt? Who are we going to bomb? The whole foundation of our economy is shot.

Exciting day at work today; attended the draw for the group stage of the #BiscuitWorldCup - live!
A whiteboard listing all the teams that qualified for the group stage of this year's Biscuit World Cup. The rules are attached to the whiteboard with two blue magnets, because people keep trying to put forward things that are not biscuits, like Weetabix, and Welsh cakes. There are three drawings of tiny vikings at the bottom of the board

By popular demand (well, two people asked), here are the qualification rules of the #BiscuitWorldCup
A screen shot of the rules of the Unit 5 Biscuit World Cup, which reads as follows:

UNIT 5 BISCUIT WORLD CUP – The Rules
1. Only Biscuits that are found in the biscuit aisle of a normal supermarket can enter the Biscuit World Cup
2. Weetabix are not biscuits and are not found in the biscuit aisle, and therefore cannot enter the biscuit world cup.
3. Jaffa Cakes are found in the Biscuit aisle, and therefore DO qualify for the Biscuit World Cup.
4. A sensible Biscuit Aisle. Not Aldi. A hoover is not a biscuit.
5. You may not make up biscuits (there is no such thing as a Chicken tikka digestive biscuit).
6. Crackers are crackers not biscuits, except when they are crisps.
7. Biscuits from overseas are allowed IF you can buy them in this country.
8. No homemade biscuits. This is a professional tournament.

There is fun to be had in *not* reviewing a manuscript. @pciarchaeology.bsky.social @cos.io #openaccess
Thank you for your invitation to review a manuscript. While I value the scholarly community's efforts to disseminate research, I have growing concerns about the publishing model many commercial publishers, including Springer Nature, employ. In my view, the current system heavily relies on taxpayer-funded research, often conducted at public institutions, yet places the resulting work behind expensive paywalls. This practice limits access for scientists and the general public in the Global South, who often cannot afford subscription fees or open-access charges.

To put this in perspective, Springer Nature's most recent financial results (for the fiscal year ending December 2025) show total revenue of €1,926.4 million, adjusted operating profit of €543.6 million, and net income of €356 million. The Research division, which includes its journals, generated €1,517.2 million of that revenue. Shareholders received dividends of approximately €25.9 million, a significant increase from the previous year. These figures show that the current model is highly profitable, but much of that profit goes to investor returns rather than making research accessible to the global scientific community.

I have worked unpaid for you in the past, but this unpaid labour, combined with publicly funded research, generates enormous profits for a publishing industry that gives back relatively little to the public or to scientists in under-resourced regions. I do not believe this is fair or sustainable. I therefore have become a champion of Diamond Open Access and an editor at PCI.
