I don’t «dread» doing this every day but your intellectual self esteem takes a beating if it takes you a long time. But today I knew it would only take a second (you just flip the top left piece left to right) and that actually gave me one less thing to worry about today🤪

The Watch brought the music of Genesis to Oslo this evening. Phenomenal musicians and great setlist. Very happy audience! Vulkan, 2026-09-30
The Watch brought us the music of Genesis tonight at Vulkan. Absolutely phenomenal musicians and a setlist from heaven! White Mountain, Knife, M Box, IKWIL, Firth, Carpet, Cage, Cinema (end), Volcano, Unquiet-Quiet, AIAMN (instr.), own song, Vine, Los Endos, Supper. I was born too late to hear this music performed live by Genesis so I’m just happy that there are musicians as good as that who want to and can play it … and not least that there is still an audience that wants to hear it. There may not be 20 years from now. Oslo 2026-09-30The Watch brought us the music of Genesis tonight at Vulkan. Absolutely phenomenal musicians and a setlist from heaven! 5) Ultimately, there are technical aspects to how trusted these models can be, but importantly also *social* ones--openness about the details of the models *and* about the models' limitations and possible inaccuracies. (Remainder is of less general interest on specifics on how to address this.)
Screenshot reading: "Central to the assessment of trustworthiness is the question of how to mitigate the potential for adverse social consequences and false decision-making. The dimensions of this assessment are reliability (consistent results across independent runs), expertise (of model developers), authenticity (transparency and access to ML model details), and goodwill (readiness to disclose model limitation and source of bias)."

4) On one level, machine learning suffers from the "garbage in, garbage out" rule where the outputs will suffer for gaps or issues in the inputs. On another level, extrapolation is always a problem (generating "confabulations"--features that don't exist).
Screenshot reading: "Another methodology-related concern with ML components is quite different from physical modelling: ML models might not always be generalizable in space and time. For example, in DTs based on physical simulation and data assimilation where ML components are represented by surrogate models, failure can stem from inappropriate model generalization, extrapolation error, physical violation or inconsistency, and model drift. Where ML is used to fill data gaps, erroneous features can occur, termed model confabulation. ML models can also fail when input data are not representative of the phenomenon being modelled. If training sets exhibit spatial, temporal, or spectral irregularities, or if unconstrained uncertainties are contained, model reliability deteriorates rapidly."

3) ML methods only find what they were designed to look for, choices made during design may lead to inaccurate results ("biased" here for everyday language purposes means this). This is followed by a paragraph focused on EU regulatory things that is too in the weeds for me to follow.
Screenshot from link reading: "As an example, owing to a lack of historical data, training sets for tsunami surrogate models are composed of modelled scenarios, where the choice of the underlying equation set predetermines the type of phenomena that can actually be detected. In contrast to physics-based models, ML applications can be configured to make automatic decisions, or to pre-select possible scenarios out of a number of choices. By doing so, the result can be biased."

2) Machine learning (ML) allows for fast computation of sometimes less than ideal datasets, which is vital for quick hazard assessment, but what are its limitations? How does it deal with concerns about reproducibility?
Screenshot from article reading: "While traditional physics-based models provide understandable and reproducible results, ML methods can generate irreproducible artifacts due to the commonly opaque character of their internal logic. This potential for failure has raised ethical concerns within the scientific software community as well as among funding agencies, because scientific activity must be replicable, requiring full understanding of all steps in the resolution process. Trust in the function of modules using ML and, more generally, artificial intelligence (AI) requires rigorous investigation for interpretable results, model documentation, and uncertainty quantification."

Some simple explanations worth quoting here, which perhaps are of broader interest regarding the uses and limitations of machine learning ("ML", or now "AI"). 1) What's a Digital Twin?
Screenshot reading: "Digital Twins (DT), virtual replicas of systems of the physical world with prediction capabilities, are showing promise as tools for assessing geohazards and aiding rapid disaster response. DTs of the Earth system constantly ingest data, such as seismic motion, crustal deformation, or sea level measurements, to provide a dynamic virtual situation update through mathematical modeling. This realistic situation can be used by the DT to generate what-if scenario projections and high-fidelity forecasts. However, owing to a combination of data uncertainty, data sparsity, model complexity and the need for short time-to-solution, some modules within DTs are implemented using machine learning (ML) and surrogate models."

Ethical considerations for geohazard digital twins
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 31 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-026-00811-0Digital twin prototypes now exist for assessing and aiding disaster response to geophysical hazards, such as volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and earthquakes. We propose a systematic assessment framework to help determine the accuracy, transparency, reproducibility, and accountability of machine learning components within these emerging prototypes.
