It’s astonishing how far ahead the 2026 El Niño is. The red line is 2026. The other warmest El Niños are the colored lines. It’s not even playing in the same league. Some of this is of course due to this natural El Niño cycle on top of long-term ocean warming… 1/

According to ERA5 global sea surface temperatures have set a new all time record. This is likely the warmest sea surface temperatures have been in at least the last 125,000 years. What’s more concerning is this will likely rise further in the coming months.

Breaking News! Code: Bonkers! El Nino continues to spike towards an all-time record high anomaly, with the Nino 3.4 sea surface temperature more than 2.6°C above the 1991-2020 baseline as of August 4th, and more than 1.0C° above the previous August 4th record set in 1997.

Earth is now warming faster than at any point in recorded geological history - around 10 times faster than the extreme warming event 56 million years ago and 20 times faster than at the end of the last ice age. We are almost certainly in a new extinction event.

Not a fan of the “Hiroshima bombs per second” metric? The oceans are now absorbing heat at nearly 700 terawatts, up from ~315 TW in 2020. That's like the continuous output of 46 million offshore wind turbines or 230 billion kettles switched on at the same time.

The May average of atmospheric CO2 at Mauna Loa (based on daily values) was around 432.3 ppm, that's 1.8 ppm higher than last year, and probably the highest in at least 15 million years.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.

The warmest temperature ever recorded in JUNE is 35.6°C. If the latest UKV is right, there’s a small chance we’ll beat that in May. Unprecedented & extreme doesn’t really cover it, consistent with climate change however.

Here is a graph of the daily temperature anomalies above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline over the last 20 years using Copernicus data. As you can clearly see, the trendline shows the planet passing 1.5°C within a year. Get on the boat, people!
