Honestly, the way Jeremy Hunt is treated as voice of reason on the economy bewilders me. It's like having Boris Johnson on to discuss how best to abide by public health rules.

There are some excellent points in this, and it deserves credit for acknowledging that work can be unpaid or voluntary. But I think we’d be better talking about “sense of purpose”. I think that’s what most people are looking for, and why they still get out of bed in the morning.

(Had a few requests for prints of this one so I now have a limited edition print of it available in my shop. Link in my bio.) #comic #cartoon #comedy #sketch #language
Print of a comic strip by Stephen Collins. Script is as follows:

1
[Scene is a GREGGS interior. A lone MAN, the only customer in the shop, is standing at counter]

MAN:
Please can I have a sausage roll.

2
GREGGS SHOP ASSISTANT:
Certainly sir

[She pulls a leaver on the panini machine and WOOSH the man disappears through a trapdoor].

Whoosh

3
[The MAN appears through a chute in an underground bunker. A voice from off-scene greets him]:

Welcome, friend

4
[We see the voice is of a military-looking resistance COMMANDER with a moustache]

COMMANDER:
You said "please can I have" instead of “can I get”…

So now you're one of us.

5
MAN:
W-where am I ...?

[We see him looking at a hi tech UNDERGROUND MILITARY BUNKER - it has resistance vibes, and has lots of screens with maps etc]

6
COMMANDER:
You've joined the resistance…

...against people saying things all American.

7
COMMANDER:
We are an underground network of sleeper agents poised to have a right go at young people the moment they say "mom" or "bangs”.

8
LIEUTENANT [Staring at screen]:
Agent 244 has just given a Zoomer in Halifax the “could/couldn't care less" speech, sir

COMMANDER:
Very good

9
[Show the map of the UK with digital pop ups on it saying ‘GOTTEN’, ‘ZEE’, ‘MATH’ etc

COMMANDER:
You may have heard our name... We are...

10
COMMANDER:
...the Fight Against New Yankee Pronunciations and Americanisms Corrupting the King's English!

11
[Show the military command center panel. It says on the wall in big metal letters]:

F.A.N.Y.P.A.C.K.E.

12
MAN
You've called yourselves the 'Fanny Pack'

COMMANDER:
We didn't spot the acronym

Perhaps. But it’s also true that failure to fix social care is putting enormous strain on the NHS. Being clear that it affects everyone today and not possibly maybe at some hypothetical point in the future is important, if only to create a sense of urgency and to overcome inertia.

Quick reminder that we should all do this for ourselves too. It’s tempting to think that it’s only something that you need with age, but accident or illness can happen at any time. Not a cheery thought I know, but future you and/or loved ones will thank you for it if you ever need it.

A thumping great win for Andy Burnham, beating Reform by 20% in a race that at first looked like it could be close. Looks like a big tactical vote as Lib Dem and Green vote down by about 10% between them. Restore getting c. 7% also helped Labour, but is v. disturbing for other reasons.

Ah yes farming, that famously un automated human endeavour. The combine harvester was patented in the 1830s. Jethro Tull invented the modern seed in 1700. Precursors to the plough date back to the ancient Mesopotamians domesticating oxen. Screw the lot of them. Bastards.

It’s a running joke in academia that Matt Goodwin is bad at maths. This sort of thing is why: the combined Labour/Green vote could have split in any way possible and Goodwin would have finished 2nd or 3rd. He did not lose because progressives coordinated. He lost *in spite of them not doing so*.

Today's by-election is another illustration of the problems with FPTP. The result may tell us less about what voters want to happen than whether they can game the system effectively to stop a result most *don't* want. The electoral system should not be an obstacle that voters have to work around.
