I’ve said this before, but it’s sort of insane that no British political party is willing to champion Games Workshop, one of the country’s most successful, British born and run companies, and would much rather simp for Palantir or OpenAI

For those in England & Wales who don’t get them on the NHS: private flu & covid jabs are available from today. I’ve just had both at my local pharmacy. £115 for the pair. Yes, that’s expensive, but if you’re a freelancer & don’t get sick pay it’s probably a lot cheaper than taking time off.

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

This is very a very thorough analysis and covers an issue I had been thinking about in the context of AI job automation - what about 'relational' work, where humans are the whole point? (TL;DR: that is not going away, and will probably grow)
(b) Relational goods. In the model, the output of a task is identical regardless of whether
it is produced by a worker or a machine. But for a large class of services, the human
provider is part of the product itself: think of teachers, nurses, therapists, waiters,
priests, live performers. Alex calls this the "relational sector" and argues that it will
grow as a share of the economy precisely as AI makes everything else cheap. Notably,
the reference class for this sector is broad: it includes any good or service where
human involvement is part of the value. This likely includes many familiar jobs such as
doctors, nurses, educators, and advisors, as well as new jobs that will be created in
response to this latent demand. The logic comes from the economics of structural change: as people get richer, they
spend a larger share of their income on goods and services with high income
elasticities, and relational goods have exactly this property (there is always a better
restaurant or a more attentive doctor). A nice current example is Starbucks, which
spent years automating its stores, concluded that this was a mistake, and is now hiring
more baristas and advertising handwritten notes on cups. This argument is related to
but distinct from the messy jobs argument: messy jobs are hard to automate for
reasons of production (local knowledge, accountability), relational tasks are hard to
automate for reasons of demand (customers value the human). Either way, a substantial
and growing part of the economy consists of tasks where machines cannot effectively
substitute for workers.

A v interesting angle on the AI hype cycle I hadn't clocked before. From the very smart Nikhil Suresh. "...we have executives around the world nervously pointing guns at each other... watching everything gradually spiral out of control" ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/ai-mani...
On a trip overseas, I had the privilege of a meeting with one of the Fortune 500 executives mentioned at the beginning of the post, who will remain anonymous so that they are not executed by firing squad by their board. As we were chatting, it became clear that they were very switched-on and technically competent, and they also happened to be at a company that had committed to the usual battery of exorbitant claims about their recent innovations – we’ve 100x’d our productivity, AI is the future of everything, I am but a vessel for OpenAI to make love to my wife. You know, normal things. But since I had them there without any microphones around, I asked why this was being repeated without opposition. Was it just sales fluff?

The answer was a lot more interesting. It was partially ridiculous sales material being delivered to an easily excitable audience, but this was not the dominant factor constraining honesty. Executives at their customers were saying absurd things about achieving 100x productivity, and this meant that if any executive at the vendor said that these gains were not plausible, it would undermine the credibility of the customer’s executive, be perceived as an attack (or heresy), and possibly result in an enterprise contract cancellation. And getting enterprise contracts cancelled because you wanted to opine on something that doesn’t really matter to your organisation’s mission is a great way to get fired.

But this company was also a major player, of the kind that signs enormous enterprise contracts with other companies. So presumably there is another vendor that has sold to them, and their CEO is worried that saying something sane will contradict this executive, and very quickly we can see how we can have executives around the world nervously pointing guns at each other, not wanting to be shot first but also watching everything gradually spiral out of control6. This is to say that we’re facing a coordination problem around executives being honest arou…
