Nice treatment of the benefits of reusing the existing built environment, including (especially) behemoths like the Barbican. While, as you note, we are still paying for the enormous carbon costs of brutalist construction, let’s not forget the new emissions we avoid by reusing it and not building.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.

I worked for years doing archaeology in the raised bogs of the Irish Midlands recording the archaeology being destroyed as a side consequence of feeding the peat into electricity production. We knew the loss needed to stop, but I never had the sense of working in the middle of ecocide
