when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

Interest has perked up in this again, so... here's an extract from the Wiltshire Times' report on the auction, published 25 Sept 1915 - the purchaser was Mrs Chubb, not Mr...:
Extract from the Wiltshire TImes, 25th September 1915, stating that Stonehenge, when the bidding readed £6,600, was [quote] "knocked down to Mrs. C.H.E. Chubb, the wife of a popular local landowner. There was much applause when the name of the purchaser was announced..." [end quote]

Again let us remember that repatriation is not really the return of physical items but rather the transfer of power of who decides ownership and place of those items. If these items are illicitly stolen or stolen by conquest what demands exist in negotiation?

The Platner discourse now being used not only as a cudgel to beat leftists with (despite most of the quick condemnations - if not complete dismissal long before this - coming from communists and other leftists) but also as a means of painting all leftists as “white” and “privileged” is really shit.

Archaeology is a mess and like I don't know how to convey that without sounding delusional Not like conspiracy wise but like we dig through rubbish and infer human behaviour, it's messy and unsure and ultimately human.

🏺 With alt-text added.
A screenshot of a statement from the Black Trowel Collective titled “BTC Call for Action - EAA”.

The subheading reads, “Urgent Archaeologists: Your EAA Participation”

The main body of text reads “Last week the executive board of the European Association of Archaeologists took the decision, in light of the ongoing genocide of the population of Gaza by the Israeli government, to exclude Israeli institutions from participating. As was done in 2022 with Russian and Belarussian institutions, colleagues from Israeli institutions were given the option to attend the online Annual Meeting of the EAA in Belgrade (2-6 Sept) as non-affiliated EAA members. They were told that any mention of or affiliation to an Israeli institution and funding agency should be avoided. That affiliations are now rejected is a small step, but we are happy that the board adopted this decision, which was voted by a great majority. Even so, as has already been called out by the BDS-movement & the Archaeologists Against Apartheid, the EAA was allowing speakers from the Hebrew University, located on occupied territory, to attend alongside more than a dozen scholars affiliated with Israeli universities complicit in the ongoing genocide of Palestinian people.
Since then, there has been a concerted campaign of intimidation against individual members of the board, including large numbers of threatening and defamatory emails. Yesterday, following these attacks, the board was forced to reverse its decision: the president's decision to allow a re-vote on this matter is undemocratic and suggests that the EAA is willing to be bullied by genocide supporters. Furthermore, volunteers have been pressured to mute any presenters who speak up, and will close whole sessions in case the organizers make statements. These attacks on academic freedom will surely damage the reputation of the organisation.”

Utterly disappointing decision by @archaeologyeaa.bsky.social to reverse this decision, and really gross to see intimidation tactics being instructed for session monitors. Support colleagues who speak up and who refuse to enforce the EAA's instructions. 🏺

It's really sinking in that the EAA are requiring session volunteers, the least powerful people at a conference, to enforce their anti democratic decision to curb the academic free speech of presenters. It's despicable.
