The EAA votes are out The great majority of our archaeological community has voted in favour of the petitions raised by #concernedEAA. We asked for a democratic process, we asked for accountability, and for the need to acknowledge the horrific genocidal policy of Israel against Gaza.

As 2025 comes to an end, we are reflecting on almost a year of organising as archaeologists of conscience, holding our representative organisations to account in the face of their negligence, silence and complicity. drive.google.com/file/d/1QPy8...
BOYCOTT
COMPLICIT
INSTITUTIONSToday is the 47th year that the world marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, recognising Palestinians’ inalienable right to self determination, sovereignty and independence from Israeli occupation. This year, Archaeologists Against Apartheid responded to the Palestinian civil society call to join the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement. Responding to this call-in from our colleagues in Palestine, we hope to provoke action within the discipline, that would increase pressure on the apartheid state of Israel, help stop Israel’s genocide, stop the culturicide, stop the scholasticide, stop the apartheid. Our representative organisations unfortunately do not share our same hopes for or solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Microgrants Temporarily Paused
Unfortunately, the Black Trowel Collective Microgrants is paused again due to the program losing its non-profit status in the US. This status was required for maintaining our US PayPal Business account, which we use to accept, hold and disburse funds. Without it, we’re unable to manage the account or process any payments. We’re currently exploring how to get our non-profit status reinstated, but until that happens, we’re unable to accept new applications.

BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS 2026 🏺 This is not a BTC action but we are helping to disseminate this call, as the president of the EAA has shown great willingness for reprisals. Please distribute widely, particularly to offline colleagues.
Poster titled BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS, with a circle/slash crossing out the EAA 2026 Athens logo.

This is an urgent call for all members of the archaeological community to join this boycott.

Do not submit a session to the EAA until Eszter Banffy steps down as president of the EAA after her anti-democratic actions. There has been a concerted campaign of intimidation against individual members of the board, including large numbers of threatening and defamatory emails and individual participants, groups, and student volunteers have been intimidated. Even after close documentation of her shameful autocratic actions in the press and on social media, she refuses to step down. We cannot let this happen, this is not what we stand for as a community.

Many departments and institutions already decided not to participate and submit sessions after it has become clear that the EAA has not resolved its issues. Do not submit a session until Banffy steps down. If you have already submitted a session, retract it.

#ArchInk 6: midden #inktober #skystorians #medievalsky 🏺
Ink and graphite sketch of a downcast man in a loincloth sat on a dung heap, addressed by a standing woman in medieval dress with a butterfly headdress. Text reads: Middens (known in the medieval West Midlands as ‘miskins’) are a gold mine for archaeologists, but as Victoria Bryant (medieval ceramics 32, 2011) pointed out, they’re frustratingly rare in the urban archaeological record. Why? Waste had to be actively managed and frequently removed: to prevent foul odours, believed to be vectors of disease, but also because the fetid mix of food waste, excrement, ashes and domestic rubbish was a valuable resource, fertilising the fields for miles around.
The City Ordinances of 1467: ‘no donge ne corruption of howsis be put or cast upon the Town dytche... but in places ordeined and appoynted for the same’
Illustrations of middens are rare, but examples telling the biblical story of Job upon the dungheap typically show middens outside the town walls. Morgan Library MS M.359, fol. 171r, Paris

#ArchInk 8: organise #inktober #skystorians #medievalsky 🏺
Ink and graphite sketch showing a rabbit holding a crossbow, eyeing a small man cowering in a tree, with another rabbit looking hungrily up from the base of the tree. On the right, a third rabbit carries a man trussed upside down to a pole. Text reads:
Medieval peasants were not an oppressed mass of servile drones. The system required them to organise effectively: to maintain law and order, manage infrastructure such as roads and churches, and often to collect taxes and rents and farm the lands of a manor on behalf of the lord.*
This could lead to a certain tension: ‘when Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?’ Asked John Ball in 1381.
If servitude was not divinely ordained, and if Peasants were capable of running the manor, why should their efforts line the pockets of others?
Lords were acutely aware of this; should they forget, the margins of manuscripts were filled with examples of the monde renversé: the order of things reversed, the meek and numerous seizing the day

#ArchInk 4: celebrate #inktober #skystorians #medievalsky 🏺
Pen and graphite sketch showing two men in medieval attire wearing hoods with bells attached, dancing to a tube played on an 80s boombox.
Text reads: This time of year has become something neither here nor there, sliding into Autumn. But Michaelmas (29th September in the new calendar, but prior to 1752 it fell on 11th October) was traditionally the beginning and end of the agricultural year: the harvest collected, the days shortening, the year’s account settled. Agricultural workers and employers met at hiring fairs to negotiate wages and contracts for the coming year. It was an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the end of a cycle.

Here's a Tiwanaku IV/V kero for "celebration", #ArchInk Day 4. Keros are a vessel type used in several archaeological Andean cultures to drink chicha (maize beer). Chicha played an important role in Tiwanaku celebrations, feasts, and rituals.
An ink wash sketch of a Tiwanaku IV/V kero. This cup flares wide at the rim, tapers to half the diameter 3/4 down, and then widens again at the base. The middle 3rd is delineated by raised edges and is decorated with a painted geometric pattern of steps and dots. There is a small unidentifiable animal head rising from the rim and facing in towards the vessel.
