At the weekend I was in Edinburgh and I decided to get a Borders Explorer ticket which entitles you to a return train journey from Edinburgh to Galashiels/Tweedbank and then unlimited use on Borders buses from Galashiels Interchange to some of the towns and villages in the Scottish Borders

I maybe don't mind us giving commands in natural language, but I don't think that an AI should ever be allowed to answer in a voice that emulates a human, because it's *not*, and it doesn't have the depth and the accountability that goes with a human. It's too seductive, and too easily misleading

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

Work-life balance hasn't been great lately (even after factoring in studying... plus it's been "summer") - need to sort that out... but was great to explore Portsmouth today, and gravitate towards the sea after enjoying the sculptures ☺️ Sandwich Terns the 'best' bird noted #PublicTransport.

Birders / naturalists - if you've got data science skills etc and free time for volunteering, how about seeing if your local species group needs help with the data side of things? GIS etc also could be valuable given the spatial nature of species records. #UKbirding

*grumbles* This is partly poor Public Health and the terrible attitude to infection control that's drummed in from school... We shouldn't still normalise infecting each other with unknown pathogens (as we don't test most infectious people - "colds" & "coughs" could be many things 😐)

That time of year again: @webs-gsmp.bsky.social by bus! Unsurprisingly for September, Port Solent (Portsmouth Harbour) was quiet with a grand total of 27 Black-headed, 3 Common & 1 Herring Gulls 😅 #LowCarbonBirding
Window view from the bus showing the top of the harbour on the opposite side of the road. Paulsgrove Lake with shipbuilding yard and Portchester Castle in the distance Marina with lots of white boats. Behind is exposed chalk from a quarry on Portsdown Hill. It is sunny with some white clouds. A few houses can be seen around the marina Amy is wearing olive trousers and sat on a blue and pink patterned seat. In the gap is a grey and red hiking rucksack with a tripod strapped to it n the side pocket. The tripod is slightly taller than the bag. It is missing a head (packed inside bag). The tripod is held in place with an extra strap attached to the load-bearing strap used to lift bags. The frame is made of trampoline mesh. It has some tape to repair holes. The bus is mainly grey but has a photo with grass

The worst case scenario isn’t “AI goes rogue and makes disastrous mistakes,” but a bunch of people at at AI startup over-promising what their systems can do, get handed access to critical systems, write sloppy prompts, code, and configurations, trigger a disaster, then trying to dodge responsibility by screaming about the Singularity and AGI, and flooding technically illiterate regulators with a massive tsunami of technobabble.
