Water refill stations are one of the forgotten facilities for travel & recreation. Like benches etc there aren't enough in most places but they're great, even if running errands! Hill Head has 4(!) and I find the taps at some train stations helpful as it saves weight to not pack as much water.
Water refill station with a plastic box underneath. It is metal and attached to the ground with a push button tap. Not like the newer, taller refill stations. It has a green sticker with a tern to mark the Solent Way. Behind is a grey beach hut, shingle, and the sea.

Still lots of tuna this afternoon, Amy: just to set the scene, this a quick snap taken just now at 1 mile+ range from the Obs patio - they're jumping out pretty constantly to the east of the Bill tip and in the low sun it's very easy to spot all the splashes with the naked eye

See the effect of cars on whole societies. The car formed cities by its needs, so that people without cars are excluded from fair participation in cities. Illich wrote this in 1973. We do not want to repeat this pattern with #AI.

We don't just use tools, tools can use us. #AI #Cars even #Housing $$$ ? Ivan Illich warned (1973) that when tech becomes too complex and centralized, it enslaves us instead of serving us. The antidote? Convivial tools, tech that empowers individuals, fosters community, & respects human autonomy.

We are now living in the future that climate scientists have been warning us about for >50 years. In today's fires, 100-meter flames and cyclonic winds with towering fire whirls are not uncommon. Both can be precursors for pyrocumulonimbus “fire clouds” (pyroCbs), combustive weather systems that...
Pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds—often called “fire clouds” or “fire-breathing dragons”—are massive, cauliflower-shaped thunderstorm clouds created by the intense heat and moisture of severe wildfires.

Learning #RStats was initially confusing but it has been great to put it to good use at work this week. So much better & quicker creating habitat layers (mostly) using R rather than just GIS like I used to! Couldn't have done that less than 6 months ago - the joys of distance learning ☺️

Awful to watch what is happening in Toronto, but the resistance to Doug Ford's attempt to endanger people not in cars is inspiring evidence of a growing international movement. We will look back on images like this the way people in the Netherlands look back at #StopDeKindermoord photos.

I need to find about ~£10k for @protect.earth before I can get out of bed. Our calls with main funding partner yesterday show they’re not going to be our lifeline. They’re unable to sponsor any trees because £5 is “too expensive” but that’s literally how much it costs. Projects will be scrapped.

Another excellent Bird Report by @hosbirding.bsky.social has just been published! It's now available as an ebook or hard copy and can be ordered via www.hos.org.uk #BirdingBook #Booksky
Hampshire Bird Report 2025, published by the Hampshire Ornithological Society in November 2026. The version posted is a screenshot of the front cover from the digital edition. Part of the first page is also showing which includes HOS' logo - a Kingfisher with blue upperparts and orange underparts. The front cover shows a Hudsonian Godwit in flight over water. It has orangey underparts which are very streaked. There is a hint of white underneath. It's underwing coverts are black and a white wing bar is visible too. It has a long thin bill.

Not saying people shouldn't ever drive but being forced to own a car (or isolated) due to terrible transport policy is wrong & adds to inequality etc. Disagree with idea that only cities / towns should benefit from measures as rural communities deserve better too, as much as possible.

Amy Robjohns @amythebirder.eurosky.social · 13/10/2026
That's the problem - but the government does have the money. It could be done by redistributing existing transport funding/subsidies. (And likewise LAs etc also should be properly funded). Not everyone can choose where they live - including children - so improving transport is important.

Guess so, although only those with licences + access to cars can make use of car parks etc. Am fully aware of car dependency etc etc, but that's why I'm keen to see meaningful investment & measures that tackle it, as well as enabling more people to access sites.

I'd rather schemes like this did more to enable people to visit without cars as that's more beneficial, rather than big car parks. Not all reserves have a car park. You can't even drive all the way to a few UK reserves! Small car park should = using alternative transport (+ provision of it).

Related, why do some shops etc insist on loud music? What is the obsession with unnecessary noise? Ex-musician, so nothing against music - in the right place & time it's great - but isn't needed in a shop when all you're after is food (or whatever)...

As I had a day ticket, and the timings fitted, I took the opportunity to 'life tick' the 11 to Averstoke - only Fareham bus route I'd not done til now! 😄 Ended up in Stokes Bay for a walk afterwards before heading home. #PublicTransport
View from bus window showing a bus stop sign which says Solent & 11. There is a hedge behind it, then grass and some red brick buildings.Fareham Creek from the bus. On one side are trees hiding Cams estate and golf course and further along the creek are lots of boats. It is sunny with clouds Stokes Bay. Sparsely Vegetated shingle, sea with glare from the sun and Isle of Wight in the distance. More clouds in this photo Lovely painted stone on a bench which seems to be partly made with pebbles. It is orange and has a black bird with an orange- yellow bill.

That time again - Port Solent (top of Portsmouth Harbour) WeBS by bus! The gulls were joined by singles of Mute Swan, Little Egret, and Great Crested Grebe. @webs-gsmp.bsky.social #LowCarbonBirding
Taken from the bus near the front with glass doors and good visibility at the front. There is a path, grass and then the harbour with some glare from the sun. In the distance there are trees and Portchester Castle.

Ah, see what you mean. Maplin sell various cables including ones aimed at transferring data which might work. If they don't sell a cable with both connections, it should be possible to get adapters to plug in to each end
