I have spent most of today: downloading Indiana Jones on PS5, playing Tropico 6 while I wait, moving files for games I won’t play for a while to my external hard drive and watching From s4 while I wait for said download/file move before eating pasta and drinking too much rose wine. Perfect day!

Also proof that a good story no matter how old or who you cast in it will pay off ( as long as you actually tell the bloody story) Can’t wait to see it as a classics student who read more versions of the Odyssey then I care to think about x

Okay, so its game on! "if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him." - Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer #TeamBin
Tweet from Rachel Reeves on Jul 8, 2026

"I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.

It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better.

But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him."

So, there is a precedent for vetoing an MP's resignation Viscount Chelsea (Henry Cadogan) applied for the Chiltern Hundreds in 1842 The Chancellor (Goulburn) refused because, get this, Cadogan wanted to resign to obstruct an investigation for bribery h/t @fascinatorfun.bsky.social and @gazhay.com
Screenshot from the linked article, with the following text highlighted

"The noble Lord had stated, that it was unusual to refuse the Chiltern Hundreds, except on account of mental incapacity, or where proceedings were pending for the expulsion of the applicants from their seats. In this case, however, the House had decided that compromises had been entered into, which had the effect of obstructing the investigation of bribery; "

In the mid-1970s, my dad - then a budding computer scientist, subsequently a math teacher - brought home my first computer: the CARDiac, a Turing-complete, all-cardboard *papercraft* computer that you could write and execute programs on: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CARDboa... 1/
An insanely complex machine made up of many gears, troughs, water wheels, springs, screws, etc. It is housed in a brick building whose facade has been broken away. Three human figures labor to power the machine, turning cranks.

Lest anyone accuse me of bargaining in bad faith here, let me start with this admission: I don't think AI is intelligent; nor do I think that the current (admittedly impressive) statistical techniques will lead to intelligence. 1/
A killer 1940s robot zapping two large domes with eye-lasers; trapped under the domes are two children, taken from 1910s photos of child laborers; one, a little girl in a straw hat, is holding two heavy buckets. The other, a newsie with a shoulder bag, is picking his nose. The background is the collapsing pillars seen in Dore's engraving of The Death of Solomon.

I wish more people (especially AI investors) would accept that LLMs are by their nature non-deterministic and THIS IS A GOOD THING! It is the very thing that makes the output good when it’s good and unreliable when it… isn’t. They are not a good tool for anything that requires accuracy

Sometimes I forget how cute humans are. Like, we give each other little gifts, and then whenever we use that thing, we think of the giver. If you give a human silly socks, they'll wear those socks the next time they see you because they want you to feel good. If animals did this, we would freak out.
