Kimono with fern motifs: Jury Prize winner at the (Institute ) Japan Dyers Association.
Visual and Sensory Analysis
This award-winning kimono, recognized with the Jury Prize by the Japan Dyers Association (Nihon Senshoku Kyōkai), showcases a dramatic botanical composition of fern fronds (shida) sprawling across a rich mocha-brown silk ground. Rising diagonally from the lower hem and sweeping across the back and sleeves, the delicate fern leaves cascade through a subtle gradient of hues—from deep indigo-green and pale ice blue to soft lavender-violet and crisp, reserve-dyed white. Fine stippled mist motifs (fuki-yose or sprayed pigment effects) dust the background between the delicate fronds, capturing the ethereal sensation of forest light filtering through morning mist.
Ferns (shida) have long served as cherished auspicious motifs (moshō) in Japanese textile history, symbolizing longevity, continuous growth, and prosperity due to their enduring, evergreen resilience and cascading leaves. In classical textile arts, depicting ferns required extraordinary technical skill to balance botanical fidelity with graphic abstraction.

As a Jury Prize winner at the Japan Dyers Association exhibition, this piece represents the pinnacle of contemporary monozukuri (mastery of textile art and dyeing craft). It seamlessly combines traditional resist-dyeing methods—such as hand-painted paste resist (yūzen) and stencil resist (katazome)—with a modern, high-fashion color palette, demonstrating the ongoing vitality of fine Japanese textile dyeing.

I am reading... a lot, right now. Mostly horror & romance. Hard to choose one! But several of the romances deal with death, so I'll share a few of those over the next weeks. First, Joanna Lowell's "Dark Season". Wild plot, gorgeous language, tragic characters who find each other. #ThursdayBookChat
Cover of Joanna Lowell's "Dark Season". A woman with blond hair is getting on a brown bedcover, her red dress is unbuttoned and is off her shoulders and her back. A man with brown hair is leaning over her, his white shirt has also slipped off of his shoulders and arms, exposing his chest. There is a shiny purple fabric in the background, though it doesn't correspond to any real fabric in the scene. The title of the book is in red gothic lettering across the bottom half of the cover.

I’m not one for feel good slogans and such, but I do think we have an obligation to focus on beauty—as a means of feeding ourselves. Maybe you aren’t great at mindfulness. But I’ve found that something as simple as looking at trees helps. Really look. Individual leaves on an endless sky. Sunlight.

Erotica - work that is written lovingly or hornily or both about sex and desire, work that is written to be sexually gratifying or stimulating - is good. Its a means of human and artistic expression like any other genre - it's perfectly fine not to want to read it or write it, but call it what it is

Personal hobbyhorse, but thinking about AI in publishing is really making me want criticism to go harder on discussing the actual style & substance of books. If we just talk about plot & vibes, we're leaving the door totally open, & missing out on the good stuff besides. "It's just words on a page."

The Tufted ground squirrel (Rheithrosciurus macrotis) is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in floof. Let's start with the *FLOOF* & talk about why they're called "VAMPIRE SQUIRRELS" last. They have the largest tail: body size ratio of any mammal on Earth: the tail is *130%* the size the body.
Taken from "Critter Science" blog: A squirrel with dark coloration, just an amazingly large tail, and long tufted ears that point slightly backwards. Along the long-thin body are orange, white and black striping. The tail looks almost exactly like one of those dust-trapping dusters.
