I’ve been in the woods of WV with zero internet and it was glorious. The first email I’m met with upon returning to work today is the news that the director of our library wants to take $ from our PD fund to buy an “expressive companion robot” for our main ref desk. Gods help me I’m going to lose it

This seems to baffle people who *don't* teach History -- you keep shoving it at us and saying, I dunno, seems like you could use it? -- instead of *listening* to us. We do this for a living. Trust us, this doesn't have a use here. Go tell your plumber you want him to use a GameBoy on your pipes.

Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

Hey Alyssa, Harry with The Proper Nest. Totally random but I came across your info through a rental search... are you looking to rent around the Boston area or thinking about buying? No pressure either way.
Can you tell me where you found my information please
Your info came through a Zillow rental search feed. Totally fair to ask. Anything I can help with or would you rather I close this out?
Can you tell me which property it was connected to, because my last corporate landlord shared my information without my permission and I would greatly appreciate knowing if it was on themI honestly don't have that level of detail, just that it came through Zillow's rental feed. I understand the concern though. If you'd rather I close this out, just say the word.
I don't really understand what zillows rental feed is exactly?
It's basically Zillow sharing rental search activity with agents in their network. I don't have specifics beyond that. If this all feels off, I totally get it and can close this out.
Please close this out
Understood, closing this out.
Take care, Alyssa.

Why is everything so transparently evil now?
"Print books from the pre-LLM era are structurally guaranteed to be free of this contamination. That alone is a significant advantage," it explains in an article on its website, as quoted by
404. "Physical books published before this date [pre-2022] are structurally clean of modern poisoning tools."
Once focused on helping libraries, distributors, and book shops find and sell books, ISBNdb now helps Al companies bulk-buy anywhere between 1,000 to one million books per order, according to 404.

"meeting people where they are" means you have to accept that they sincerely believe what they believe. It does NOT mean that you have to pretend to agree with their beliefs. In fact, you must be honest when you don't. Grown ups have to deal with people who don't agree with them all of the time.

That is because archives are woefully under-resourced! I used to work in a relatively well-resourced repository, and even so, the amount of stuff coming in always outpaced ability to process it in a timely fashion. All archives have a backlog.

Thank you for pointing this out! Most archival collections are not digitized, period. I spend quite a lot of time explaining this to patrons who think digitization is a given in archives when it’s actually the exact opposite. Not for lack of trying on the part of archivists 🫠

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

Millions of American voters wanted to be villains. They came to believe it’s the key to success, while goodness is weak, woke, loser stuff, done only to signal. Offered the option of unvarnished villainy, they enthusiastically took it. Seeing others suffer more made them feel big. And here we are.
