This. The most important thing I learned at PAA this year was @samsellers.bsky.social concept of demographic federalism. When the baby boom cohort is dying, births are slowing, and migration is completely fucked, the characteristics of a place are going to matter a LOT for its population patterns

My rural neighbors are genuinely struggling to make ends meet in ways I have never seen. Seems bad the American political system is exquisitely designed to exonerate the powerful.

Pretending everything is a toy version of gender is a great justification for ignoring everything else (class, race, you name it)

Since I started noticing in the late 90s, I‘ve seen lists like this in bathrooms in libraries, bars, and restaurants. I even found a list with three dudes’ names in different handwritings in a copy of Brigitte Jones’ Diary.

The consequences of abortion bans are no longer shocking in part because their very existence reenforces the biopolitical right to maim women through mandatory pregnancy.

The result: national govts, think tanks and universities refocusing AI evaluations to focus on highly speculative problems where there is no empirical evidence that they're possible - but lots of ideological reason to take them seriously, whatever the costs of the very REAL issues we then ignore .

Calling this a "fight against fertility tech" is like saying abortion opponents are in a "fight against reproductive health" - it's right in a way but it obscures the actual objective.

Demographers recognize the “infection makes us stronger” as one of heterogeneity’s ruses. But in this case, the fact that infection doesn’t make individuals stronger is strategic. The focus is on making a eugenically “fitter” population over time and they think deaths can help them get it.

“71.5% of adults reported experiencing fatigue at least some days in the past 3 months (54.9% some days, 10.7% most days, and 5.9% every day)” 71.5% sounds bad also only 17% most or all days seems low compared to everyone I know.

A lot of data centers are on the sites of former mills, right? Seems the contrast a small town's worth of jobs vs virtually no jobs would be a bigger part of discussions of data center hate. People remember when there were jobs there! Now it's just noisy and takes up all the electricity for nothing!
