I saw the words "taking up smoking" and immediately assumed it was like a "fuck everything, we're all gonna die soon" kind of thing but I kept reading and the real reason is so much dumber

These are HS students applying for college. I'm not even going to blame the schools on this one. I'm going to blame the parents. There are certain basic things I think you have a responsibility to make sure your kids know, especially if you expect them to go to college.

Rewatched Saloum after this reminder crossed my path & loved it as much or more as the first time. Starts off dropping you into its world with no background explanation or "worldbuilding," some poetry, and a soundtrack that's electric. If you're into mythologies of bodies of water, it's for you.

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

Got up to some Halloweeny shenanigans tonight. I bought the doll head and clown mugs, natch.
Two cocktails. One in a tumbler glass with skulls and a moonlit graveyard printed on it. The other is a ceramic doll head mug with a straw stuck in the skullTwo more cocktails. A tall clear glass with dead trees printed on the sides. The other a ceramic mug that looks like a creepy clown's head

Personally, I think it's because the average person looks at writing, art, or listens to a song and thinks "I could do that." And theoretically, they could (if they put in the requisite time and effort). Most people don't look at Olympic medalists and assume they could easily swap places.

Today's performance that was overlooked and didn't get enough recognition outside of horror fans: Duane Jones in Ganja and Hess. He's most well known for Night of the Living Dead, but Ganja and Hess is a stellar performance, full of life and pathos.
A dimly lit close-up of a bearded man wearing a light-colored collared shirt. He faces the camera with a serious expression while holding a lit white candle in front of his mouth. The warm flame illuminates the lower part of his face and shirt, while the background remains mostly dark with indistinct foliage or surroundings.

Preaching to the choir here, but this is very good. Something I've started to appreciate more over the years is that I write precisely because it is difficult. Writing is an act of communication that allows for multiple iterations until you find the "best" one. It's not easy, and it shouldn't be.

I wish that women didn't have to open a vein and spill their trauma every time there's a high-profile rape case. We shouldn't have to do that to drive home what a widespread fucking problem this is.

Are there other examples of this? Movies where they changed the name of the script primarily because the producers got the right to some Boomer anthem that they could then use as a title song to milk some cheap nostalgia? Because I feel like this was kinda a *thing* in the 90s/early 90s.

One of my quibbles, though, is that the backrooms themselves remind me too much of "the Upside Down" from Stranger Things in that they both have rich thematic potential but ultimately signify nothing.

People always use the word "liminal" to describe the movie but I'm not sure I've seen anybody say "hauntological." It's a movie about the distortion of memory, set in 1990 and made by someone born in 2005.

for fucking REAL. the depth of trauma for those undiagnosed with ADHD is real. not just the way we feel like we're constantly failing (because everyone is telling us we are) but not understanding WHY because we have no context to understand other people aren't struggling with the things we are.

Just watched BACKROOMS, finally. Amazing that I hadn't been terribly spoiled on it considering all I've been hearing and how long I waited. I liked it? Had expected it to be too repetitive but it held my attention to the point I was surprised when it ended. Still a bit unsatisfied.
