NZ has - almost uniquely amongst our peers - tanked its economy and pushed 10,000s onto the dole (and offshore). We were told that this strategy would 'get interest rates down, tame inflation, and drive growth 🎉'. Yet, here we are, slumped and vying to be inflation champs. What went wrong? [🧵1/n]

Haven't done a why is the economy in the toilet explainer for a while. Let's try again... Money makes the economy go round. If people don't have money to spend, then fewer jobs are needed, and less energy and materials are consumed. Where does money come from? Easy... [🧵1/n]
Image shows 'Bank Lending' and 'Govt Spending' as 'money taps' - pouring money into the economy depending on appetite for bank loans and how much Govt decides to spend respectively.
The economy is shown as a money-go-round - with people exchanging money for goods. As money moves between people, work is done, people get paid, goods are made and consumed etc. Obviously this economy also relies on energy and materials.
Bank loan repayments and Govt taxation are shown as drains on the economy - rubbish bins - where money goes to die. This is indeed the reality.
Onshore and offshore savings remove money from the economy, but savings can also be spent. In NZ, net saving always wins out.

Seymour's privatisation push

David SEymour believes privatisation is a good thing. Let me refresh his memory.

The BNZ had to be bailed out...twice, and is now in foreign ownership.
The railways had to be bough back, having been run into the ground by foreign private ownership.
Air NZ had to be bought back, having been destroyed by incompetent private management.

The CBD of our largest city was blacked out because of inadequate maintenance to boost returns for shareholders.

Our electricity system is a mess and "competition" costs of consumers moving between escalators that only go up, never down.

Seymour is a typical neo-liberal idealogue who refuses to abandon his ideology in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary
