Long thread: So, I went to the official AI "tool" of the U.S. government at America.gov and asked it to, "play Minecraft" -- then things got weird as it rambled on with this stream of consciousness response: I see the constituent you mean. 1/47

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

We placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it, and found an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books.

So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

savage ending to this piece
Quote from the Atlantic article:

But when they publish a document about Claude's moral education and have their in-house philosopher do a press tour, we should understand them as asking the rest of us to indulge them in their fantasies. We don't have to play along. In writing this essay, I have spent more time indulging them than they deserve, in the hopes that it will keep you from spending your time indulging them. If you want to think about LLMS, there are scores of other questions more worthy of your contemplation; you can safely ignore the question of their being conscious.

For generations, the American empire was the most powerful force on earth, and so we tended to assume that it was the most *durable* force on earth - surely anything so powerful *must* also be *eternal*? 1/
A detail from Dore's engraving depicting the drowning of the Leviathan - a great sea-serpent thrashing in a chaotic dark sea. The image has been altered: it has been hand-tinted. The sea serpent is wearing a MAGA hat. Drowning nearby are a beleagured Uncle Sam, an Android robot, and the Statue of Liberty.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.
