One of my strongest takeaways from the Bee this week is that it was a showcase for why critical thinking matters more than ever. So much of what the kids do up there isn’t rote memorization—it’s using their insane prep to solve words like puzzles (using etymology, patterns) in real time.

A staffer measured Amalia’s blood-oxygen saturation—which, in a healthy individual, is between ninety-five and a hundred per cent—and found that it was in the low fifties. “Such a low amount of oxygen going to the brain can, if it’s long enough, kill off parts of the brain—it’s really, really high-stakes,” Prantik Saha, a pediatrician who reviewed Amalia’s medical records, told me. “It’s shocking that this level of callousness and omission of care could occur.” Amalia was taken to a local hospital, where it became clear that she needed care beyond what the facility could provide. She was transferred to a larger hospital in San Antonio, where she was given five diagnoses: Covid-19, RSV, bronchitis, pneumonia, and an ear infection. She received supplemental oxygen and intensive care.

got so mad at jay caspian kang's dogshit new yorker piece on minneapolis that i emailed them about it...being in your late 30s is crazy

long letter to the editor opening with: "I am surprised to see such simplistic ignorance presented as coherent political thought, particularly in a legacy publication like The New Yorker. Kang does not appear to be aware that the mass protest on Saturday, Jan 10, drew thousands of people in bitterly frigid temperatures - and that unusually warm temperatures both prior to and immediately following that day did not result in massive numbers of people flooding the streets, even as local resistance to ICE and local visibility of that resistance grew exponentially.

This is not just a quibble from flyover country. The piece's thesis appears to be that liberals do not have any faith in mass protest's ability to force policy change (yet show up anyway); it portrays liberal rage as largely impotent and unimaginative. In the macro sense this is a perfectly valid, if tired, point to make, but it is infuriatingly ignorant when talking specifically about Minneapolis, and even more specifically about Minneapolis progressives and leftists in 2026. The mass demonstration on Saturday was a rally planned prior to Renee Good's killing. We who attended the rally who were clear-eyed about the utility of our presence: it was a mass demonstration with one specific purpose, to reject the Trump administration's narrative that a silent majority of Minnesotans wanted ICE to continue brutalizing immigrants and shooting American mothers in the head. "
