![As [SFSU President] Mahoney sees it, one solution for the university - and the city — is to embrace a new vision that moves beyond education for education's sake.
"I don't think a young person today who says, 'I want to go to college because I want to make a good living' is being greedy. I think they're being realistic," Mahoney said.
So this summer, she hired Ines Barbosa from Northeastern University in Oakland to aim the campus in a new, industry-connected direction, with details yet to be determined.
"Her job is, very intentionally, to help us connect with every industry and every organization - government, arts — and possible partner in San Francisco," said Mahoney. "To start to build pipelines from every (academic) major to that employer."
The idea is not to kill the liberal arts, said the president, whose own field is history.
"We need English majors. And we need philosophers. But we probably need them working for Al companies.
