In which a police chief argues the 287(g) program is actually good because now his cops are basically immigration lawyers. Burn this fucking program to the ground.

How is this, a common argument from cops re: 287(g), not a threat? "LANCASTER, Pa. (WHP) — Because of agreements between police departments and ICE, the number of ICE appearances have been reduced in central Pennsylvania over the past year, high-ranking law-enforcement officials tell CBS 21."

Is there a chance Schmitt's team used an LLM to arrive at their wildly incorrect conclusions? Of course. But maybe we're over-indexing for "every gaffe is the result of AI" when humans have been capable of this level of stupidity for thousands of years.

NEW: The Supreme Court, over the objections of the 3 liberal justices, grants a stay in the D.V.D. litigation, authorizing the Trump admin to resume third country removals without any notice to people being sent to countries they've never been to. The Court also agrees to hear the case in December.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2026 CERTIORARI GRANTED 26-426 DEPT. OF HOMELAND SEC., ET AL. V. D.V.D., ET AL. (26A406) The application for stay presented to Justice Jackson and by her referred to the Court is granted. The February 25, 2026 order and judgment of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, case No. 1:25-cv-10676, are stayed. The application is also treated as a petition for a writ of certiorari, and the petition is granted. The parties are directed to brief and argue the following questions: (1) Whether the district court had jurisdiction over Respondents’ claims. (2) Whether the district court had authority to enter classwide declaratory relief and APA vacatur under 8 U. S. C. §1252(f)(1). (3) Whether the Government’s Guidance on third-country removals is unlawful under 8 U. S. C. §1231(b), the Due Process Clause, or FARRA/CAT and its implementing regulations. (4) Such other questions that the Government determines are appropriate for the proper disposition of the case. The Clerk is directed to establish a briefing schedule that will allow the case to be argued in the December 2026 argument session. The stay shall terminate upon the sending down of the judgment of this Court. Justice Sotomayor, Justice Kagan, and Justice Jackson would deny the application for stay.

I genuinely don't think you can overstate how dumb this whole thing was. They clearly didn't have any other proof that Smith was in Atlanta (b/c he wasn't). So even if he just so happened to be in Atlanta at the time, what was going to be the follow-up?

why this is notable: the alpr photos show martinez and ruiz in the 30 days *before* the crash in brighton park. during that time, neither was under investigation for a crime, but police were able to retrace their movements anyway in an attempt to fabricate pretense for criminal charges.

In July, roughly 6,200 people ended up in ICE detention due to a 287(g)-related arrest — nearly 15% of ICE's total arrests for the month. That's up from around 600 program arrests in July 2025.

Respectfully, the one concern I have with this @us.theguardian.com article is that it doesn't dig into _why_ the 287(g) program has ballooned since January 2025. Like the absurd financial incentives added to the program last October. It's a cash cow for participating agencies.

One of the more salient arguments for getting rid of sheriffs' offices is how many of them include their nicknames on official correspondence — on their website, in their signatures on 287(g) agreements, etc. "Everyone is 12" theory holds.

Better yet, tear up the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (1996): - the source of the 287(g) program and ICE's administrative warrant BS - made it harder for people to 'fix' minor violations re: immigration status, and easier to deport them - 'public charge' rules
