Paris has been praised in recent years for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they don’t get enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything they’ve been doing is common sense. They’re moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air and cooling the city.

Here's the kicker with this, though... This fleet is costing £1bn over its lifetime. To electrify the 45km from the ECML to Saltburn would cost about £135-200M. How much did batteries *and charging infrastructure* add to the cost of this order? Was it less than this?

If the ~100 people in the Uber x Wayve launch photo wanted to take a robotaxi, based on average occupancy, there would be 179 vehicles. At their usual braking distance at 20mph, the line would be around 4.2km long. Cities are about to get more congested for the benefit of tech companies.

I think every politician who attacked the ULEZ proposals & Mayor @london.gov.uk before the expansion should stand up and say if they now think they got it wrong or not. Is this a moment we learn from in reducing ills of motoring or is the next scheme doomed to face same type of unevidenced attacks?

North Tyneside Council is closing its outdoor education centre, High Borrans in Windermere. Owned by the council since 1967, for 60 years children and young people from North Tyneside have had free and subsidised trips to walk, climb, kayak, and play together. Another loss to austerity.

The problems with UK politics run deeper than who’s in Number 10. First Past the Post produces big majorities without real public support and turns politics into a zero-sum scramble instead of cooperation. It’s not a system built to deal with the big challenges we face. No wonder it keeps failing.

Regardless of the merits of the social media curfew policy, I dislike the ‘16yr olds will be able to vote but not…’ criticism. Voting is an (almost always) low impact activity that we want ppl to get into the habit of doing. It should absolutely be towards the bottom of the age permissive range.

I’m amazed anyone needs reminding of this, but local government spending power per person fell by 18% from 2010 to 2024 (would have been 26% but for increases in council tax). At the same time, social care pressures on local govt have grown a lot. The decay of the public realm is NOT a mystery

Police in Birmingham held a roads policing operation, supported by volunteer Special Constables. In one evening on one road, they pulled over 166 vehicles and took action in a staggering 1 in 3 stops. Imagine if Roads Policing was properly funded!
Our #RPUspecials joined @BrumPolice specials on Saturday evening for a Traffic Op, seizing 7 vehicles.
166 vehicles stopped, with 24 drivers reported for offences ranging from No Licence to No Seatbelt.
Additionally, 32 drivers received education for varying offences.
