I want to try something again at #ASHG26: I'll block off some time on Weds/Th/Friday afternoons to meet with trainees who would be interested to chat on any topic. I have done this the last 2 years and it was great to meet a whole bunch of new people, from many countries, at all career stages!

New email to NIH Director Bhattacharya...
Dear Director Bhattacharya: I read with interest the recent Washington Post story "Vought pushes for scrutiny of NIH grants in Oval Office clash" (https://wapo.st/3UPK3BP). The article states:
"Jay Bhattacharya, director of the $47 billion health agency, which is the nation’s largest single funder of biomedical research, defended the NIH’s grant-making process, the people said."
It seems that OMB Director Vought has an even broader definition of "ideological boondoggle" than you do.

While I remain deeply skeptical, I am pleased to see that you may be seeing how the attempts to politicize NIH (to which you have previously contributed) are damaging to the NIH mission. If this is truly the case, then welcome to the resistance.

Sincerely,

Jeremy M. Berg
Director, NIGMS 2003-2011

P.S. It may be that you are now a victim of the "leopard biting face" story. If that is the case, perhaps you can take some comfort in the fact that your new NIDCR director has experience with leopard-induced injuries although he appears to lack all other qualifications appropriate for an NIH institute director.
