New email to NIH Director Bhattacharya...
Dear Director Bhattacharya: I read with interest the recent Washington Post story "Vought pushes for scrutiny of NIH grants in Oval Office clash" (https://wapo.st/3UPK3BP). The article states:
"Jay Bhattacharya, director of the $47 billion health agency, which is the nation’s largest single funder of biomedical research, defended the NIH’s grant-making process, the people said."
It seems that OMB Director Vought has an even broader definition of "ideological boondoggle" than you do.

While I remain deeply skeptical, I am pleased to see that you may be seeing how the attempts to politicize NIH (to which you have previously contributed) are damaging to the NIH mission. If this is truly the case, then welcome to the resistance.

Sincerely,

Jeremy M. Berg
Director, NIGMS 2003-2011

P.S. It may be that you are now a victim of the "leopard biting face" story. If that is the case, perhaps you can take some comfort in the fact that your new NIDCR director has experience with leopard-induced injuries although he appears to lack all other qualifications appropriate for an NIH institute director.

New email to Director Bhattacharya tonight. 1/2
Dear Director Bhattacharya: I read with interest and dismay the recent announcement of the new incumbent for the position of Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Dr. Gaitanis may (or may not) be a competent physician but he hardly has the qualifications on would expect for an NIH institute director. He has NO history of NIH funding and apparently has never even applied. He has minimal management experience, having led nothing larger than a clinical division. His publication record is entirely unremarkable at best. His only major award is from a politicized organization on whose board he sits. His distinguishing qualifications are his public positions (and legal expert service) on autism and vaccine injuries.
