NYTimes: We sat down with 3 independent Erie, CO voters at the Old Mine cafe. After the ECMWF has failed to to deliver on precipitation on a regular basis, DOGE checks, and lower prices, they are willing to give yesterday's 12Z ECMWF forecast of rain in Erie another chance.

German chemist Dr. Ida Noddack co-discovered Rhenium (element 75) in 1925. She died #OTD in 1978. She was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission (1934). Her theory was met with fierce skepticism and outright dismissed by contemporary physics giants. But 4 years later...🧵 #WomenInSTEM
A close-up, black-and-white portrait of Dr. Ida Noddack (1896–1978), the pioneering German chemist and physicist who co-discovered the chemical element rhenium and was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission in 1934. Dr. Noddack is positioned at a slight three-quarter angle while turning her face toward the camera, establishing a direct connection with the viewer. Her light-colored hair is styled neatly, swept up and away from her face in a soft, textured wave arrangement typical of the mid-20th century. Her expression is composed and contemplative, marked by a subtle, knowing half-smile that conveys an aura of quiet confidence, intelligence, and academic resolve. She wears a simple, dark-toned V-neck blouse or jacket, drawing focus directly to her facial features. The portrait is set against a completely dark, minimalist background devoid of any objects or setting context, creating a formal studio aesthetic. The lighting is soft yet deliberate, illuminating the left side of her face to emphasize her expression while casting gentle shadows across her right cheek. The composition relies on high-contrast monochromatic tones and a grainy, vintage texture characteristic of early photographic film, reinforcing its archival and historic nature. The overall mood is dignified and deeply intellectual, honoring her enduring legacy as a foundational pioneer of nuclear and atomic science.

The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...

Brilliant sunset followed by great lightning! #azwx #weather #landscape 📷
A few minutes after sunset and the middle and high clouds are still illuminated by the sun. In the foreground is the nearly dry lake bed of Mormon Lake. In the distance is Mormon Mountain. The sun has set but twilight still illuminates the upper portion of the thunderstorm while the lower part is lit up by a lightning bolt -- which is reflected in the shallow water of the lake bed.A thunderstorm is illuminated from in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning.

Let's talk about the weather and climate changes that preceded the Nepali glacier collapse and landslide. It's well known that Nepal is warming, but we can do better and estimate the changes at the 5200m elevation site where the mass of ice and rock ultimately broke loose. A thread. 🧵🧪

I had Claude put together a program to plot CO statewide daily averages of ACIS GridData with an area mean. The plot using ACIS only goes back to 1951, but the program can also go back to the 1800s using GHCN stations (with limitations in spatial coverage). You can see how warm 2026 (bold black) is.

Urban firestorms like the one that devastated Spokane Saturday have been growing more common because of increased development in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and climate change. In this post, I document 9 such fires since 2016 in the U.S. yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/08/urba...

This smoke is thick enough it may mask fire radiative power that drives the smoke source info the model requires for good forecasts, and therefore, this may lead to underestimates of smoke in coming days. We saw this in the models for Sept 2020 in the same region.
