Can’t imagine many marine animal and plant species have the adaptive capacity we are pushing the extremes to now, and by us, I mean this El Niño certainly wouldn’t be this strong without greenhouse warming.

For sure. The injuries almost don't matter for once since the team is so (unexpectedly) marginal to begin with.

Broncos and my Packers both seem cursed in the injury department.

On my run this morning, in gusty winds and 70s F before sunrise, today just felt like it could be a perfect day for fire.

No thermometer on me during this trail run but if it was 70 F at the car, then it almost certainly is in the 70s maybe 80s as I hit an inversion. Downsloping winds, yes, but this is not a healthy climate thing.

Almost 70 F in S Boulder at 5:30 am in October is just comically stupid and annoying after the last fiscal year of dry heat we’ve relentlessly endured.

* I have to qualify some areas of the SW US had a massive monsoon, but we missed out on it all in Boulder-Erie, so that's some locality bias on my part.

After the relentlessly hot and dry year we've had in the SW US, though (since Fall 2025), this really does suck and so I think we're all just fatigued from it.

Yep, I just roll my eyes when anyone posts a positive outlier rain forecast from one of the models these days for our area. We are under a cruel spell that eventually has to break, right?

Hopefully the polls are more accurate than the infinite positive forecasts for precip in Erie-Boulder.

NYTimes: We sat down with 3 independent Erie, CO voters at the Old Mine cafe. After the ECMWF has failed to to deliver on precipitation on a regular basis, DOGE checks, and lower prices, they are willing to give yesterday's 12Z ECMWF forecast of rain in Erie another chance.

Flex away. I can live vicariously through all our neighbors’ better precipitation fortunes. I may have to become a rain tourist to remember the feeling of a drenching downpour.

German chemist Dr. Ida Noddack co-discovered Rhenium (element 75) in 1925. She died #OTD in 1978. She was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission (1934). Her theory was met with fierce skepticism and outright dismissed by contemporary physics giants. But 4 years later...🧵 #WomenInSTEM
A close-up, black-and-white portrait of Dr. Ida Noddack (1896–1978), the pioneering German chemist and physicist who co-discovered the chemical element rhenium and was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission in 1934. Dr. Noddack is positioned at a slight three-quarter angle while turning her face toward the camera, establishing a direct connection with the viewer. Her light-colored hair is styled neatly, swept up and away from her face in a soft, textured wave arrangement typical of the mid-20th century. Her expression is composed and contemplative, marked by a subtle, knowing half-smile that conveys an aura of quiet confidence, intelligence, and academic resolve. She wears a simple, dark-toned V-neck blouse or jacket, drawing focus directly to her facial features. The portrait is set against a completely dark, minimalist background devoid of any objects or setting context, creating a formal studio aesthetic. The lighting is soft yet deliberate, illuminating the left side of her face to emphasize her expression while casting gentle shadows across her right cheek. The composition relies on high-contrast monochromatic tones and a grainy, vintage texture characteristic of early photographic film, reinforcing its archival and historic nature. The overall mood is dignified and deeply intellectual, honoring her enduring legacy as a foundational pioneer of nuclear and atomic science.

As much as I lament how many stupid running injuries I get, at least I still think I have not suffered as many injuries per unit time as Aaron Banks and across as many distinct body parts.

The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...

It’s impressive how there can be an inverse relationship between the obvious warming and acceptance that it’s happening. I guess covid set my personal bar (extremely low) on how dang irrational humans can be with inconvenient truths.

Sorry, I completely misunderstood your second post. I wrongly inferred you were saying there was a strong D -> R transition and you were simply clarifying your definition. Yes, the anti MAGA sentiments are encouraging and obvious.

I might need to re-initialize the model with higher basic state winds to generate EF5 wind damages, but as long as it doesn't violate the CFL condition, that would be an interesting experiment and quite useful to science in many ways.
