Working on an interactive, browser-based simulation of coastal Kelvin waves with @visualpde.com. An initial displacement of the thermocline in the equatorial Pacific (as with ENSO) generates both Rossby waves moving west and a Kelvin wave moving east, which eventually hits the coast.

As of Hurricane Nolo, the combined eastern + central North Pacific basin has produced 7 major hurricanes (category 3+) out of 9 hurricanes total thus far in 2026. That's out of 20 named storms -- with Tropical Storm Rachel expected to make that 10 hurricanes later this week.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.
