I can’t put into words the fury this reporting fills me with. How more indignity must trans people be spoken be subjected to by our national broadcaster?

One patient, Sion Jewell, had been due to have surgery to remove their breasts and had packed to go to hospital, only to be told in a phone call 24 hours before it that it had been called off.
The 29-year-old from Anglesey, who is biologically female, had waited five years from their initial GP referrals and the surgery had been postponed twice already for mental health reasons.
The surgery would be irreversible and would mean, for example, that Jewell would not be able to breastfeed in future.
"When I found out I was heartbroken - I was distraught and completely disheartened," they said.

From the outside looking in, American healthcare can only be described as a horror story - but in the specific domain of gender-affirming healthcare, it's probably better at actually pulling through. It's in most regions described as being more timely, more available, and cheaper than private here.

Then, if you did choose to self-medicate or go through a private clinic and now want surgery - you're probably paying out of pocket. Health insurance has more of a supplementary role here, and the majority don't have it - but even if you do, most policies explicitly don't cover trans surgeries.

Of the available private clinics, most are borderline extractive scams - they'll prescribe hormones eventually, but they'll charge you hundreds if not thousands a year for the privilege. This is further obscured by mandatory check-ups and blood tests not included in the hefty subscription price.

Of my friends: most are self-medicating, a few are with private clinics, and one or two were contacted by the NHS after years of waiting. Those who were able to access the NHS were put through what they describe as some of the most dehumanising experiences in questioning they've ever experienced.

Privatisation of healthcare isn't the answer, but the lesson to learn from Britain is that retaining decentralised policymaking in public healthcare is important. The orchestrated denial of trans healthcare in Britain has been enabled significantly by centralised policymaking.
