This is so important. They’ve broken the economic models that fund journalism is because they recognize the *purpose* of journalism threatens their bullshit-based valuations, ie, the sources of their wealth and power. Yet actual-existing journalists were instead crucial for creating their myths.

There's an interesting case to be made that younger generations are too focused on precise labels for everything as a coping mechanism, but the people who are largely making that argument right now are more concerned with taking away the labels that genuinely means something and help access care

The way that the alberta ndp's brian mason misrepresented the study of automated traffic enforcement and called it a “cash cow”, leading us directly to the the worsening road safety in this province over the last few years is so embarrassing

The two things about this Ed Sheeran debacle that upset me the most are firstly the plight of the Palestinian people in the face of American Zionism and then secondly having to look at Ed Sheeran's face this much in a day.

Police drug seizures without arrests roughly doubled during the “decriminalization pilot.” Decrim never happened in BC. It was just a smokescreen to stall demands for drug user liberation, and another betrayal of public trust by police.

Remember how every time we build an LRT line the numpties emerge to demand we tunnel it so construction doesn't interfere with traffic?
A photo of Jasper Avenue downtown during the construction of the underground LRT stations. The street is covered with an unruly looking mixture of excavators, cranes, cement mixers and construction materials. In the far background, a city bus is attempting to make a turn to detour around it.

My belated #yegdt hot take is that it actually isn't that bad. It has problems, but they're long-running ones that go back decades. Claims that it's broken are very overwrought, and worth a side-eye; it's generally been getting better. And no, it's not because of the hockey thingy. 1/lots w/ maps!

honestly the best way to tell if an image online is fake is to introspect about whether looking at reinforces a sense of superiority over some group towards which you already feel contempt

in fact shame is well-studied by psychologists who have demonstrated that it is pretty bad at motivating people to better behaviour and is much more likely to be part of a repressive social structure that keeps us paralyzed and exploited, you might be thinking of guilt or just part of that structure

More to the point, the shame about the use of the big tech platforms isn't _useful_. Everybody has an instagram account and feels bad about it while Zuck profits off of them. What the fuck good does that do anybody? All those Substack writers are ashamed but still on there. It means nothing.

It doesn’t accomplish anything, just as you feeling ashamed about having an Instagram account while Zuckerberg profits from it doesn’t accomplish anything. It’s a way of making some people feel morally superior about a thing while not actually causing any accountability or change to the real harms.

A common tactic--including in the pages of Jacobin magazine--is to pretend to complain about the "slogan" of "defund" and to use that complaint to avoid conversation about common sense and popular policies like transferring $$$ from cops to health, education, and housing.

I like having a neighbourhood bakery a lot but the idea that they are donating money to downtown businesses is completely silly. They can’t even keep their good staff to keep their cafe open past 2 pm. I can support downtown by walking to downtown where in fact many places are doing fine.
