Is infill "destroying" Edmonton's neighbourhoods? Here are the facts: 📊 Only 1% of RS-zoned properties redeveloped since 2024 🏡 Half of new units have 3+ bedrooms 🚇 Density is clustering near LRT 📉 Most mature neighbourhoods have fewer people than 50 years ago #yeg #yegcc #yimby

#yegbike Fun facts told at council: 1) we have 780 kms of bike lanes 2) all missing links will be closed in the next budget cycle Unfortunately these are both lies. @apaquette.bsky.social estimates we have 41 kms of bike lanes and ATNE team cancelled many missing link projects

I love how the main takeaway of this video is that making cyclists yield to cars at intersections is ridiculous. Unfortunately Edmonton has this same rule and even installed yield signs on intersections that use elephant feet markings.

The city could make a fortune if they actually enforced red light running on protected left turns. Driving culture has shifted so that 1-2 cars just run the red every time.

This might be the most ridiculous car ads I’ve seen in a while. Main selling point is that it’s big, so big you literally can’t see in front of you when parking.

Edmonton’s vision zero team suggested doing a handful of the worst intersections over the next five years. They also tied the funding to expensive new left turn lanes because heaven forbid vision zero actually reduces vehicle capacity. Turns out you can actually just do stuff

The bougiefication of Rockridge, Oakland, fueled by single family zoning. These are the same three homes in 2019 and today. With different zoning, capital would go toward converting these 100-year old homes into multi-family housing, a 2-block walk from BART. Instead, people are just upgrading.

Hey #yegbike just a reminder about the detour on the NW of the High Level Bridge. Several cyclists seemed very confused about where to go on my commute because there is zero wayfinding signage about where the detour is. So I figured I'd share this detour map that Paths for People shared earlier.
Satellite map view of Constable Ezio Faraone Park and the High Level Bridge. There is a legend in the upper left-hand corner with a red line indicating shared path closed and a green line indicating shared path open. The typical shared use path and pedestrian sidewalk straight from the 97 Ave crosswalk to the northwest entrance of the shared use path on the High Level is closed. The detour is west along 97 Ave to connect onto the shared use path just slightly west of 110 St and then make a slight right to continue west on the shared use path avoiding the cobbled promenade and then left to continue on the shared use path towards the northwest entrance of the High Level Bridge. This path is indicated on the map with a green line.

This ignores the fact that OKC has a footprint almost twice the size of Edmonton and a population density almost 3 times smaller.

This. Cities, lack coherent vision for the public realm. What vision there is is set through transportation policy for widening roads, and paving the landscape. There’s no vision for design, design quality nor the processes it takes to produce excellence. 1/

If we had a real Vision Zero policy or team, there would have been a quick-fix response to this. The intersection likely won’t see any fix for years because the team is wasting time doing endless consultations just to install a few speed bumps. #yegbike 🧵

An example of why we can’t have nice things. A handful of seniors who want to drive as fast as possible force concessions from an affordable housing developer. Council then puts the project on hold “for months”. An abandoned building <1km from the LRT is the right place for housing.

From the heritage places strategy. IMO this is a fallacy. People don’t go to Oliver exchange or whyte because they’re old. They go there because they’re in dense neighbourhoods and are relatively pedestrian friendly. They go for craft beer or ice cream, not the building age.
