Campus sexual assault is not an “institutional problem” merely in the sense that assault takes place at an institution. It is an “institutional problem” in the sense that the institution fosters the conditions for the problem, punishes the victims, and colludes with the perpetrators to cover it up.

I've been hearing that Cornell's culture of fraternity fueled rape is especially bad since I moved to the US in 2017. Last year, the figure was over 1 in 3 female students who had been raped. The victims are often punished more harshly than the perpetrators are. I hope every chapter of Chi Phi burns

In 2013, the Daily Princetonian revealed that in 2008, Princeton University had paid to conduct a survey of students about sexual assault - then buried the results when *one in six* female undergrads reported unwanted vaginal penetration within the past year. That’s just under 17%.

Keiran: And I think that there’s traces of that in all of the essays. And I know I’ve said this to you personally, but there’s something about the way you approach any topic, pretty much, it seems, where you assume in advance that there’s this kind of sort of promise of communism in it. You know, it almost doesn’t matter what you’re analyzing. It’s like: I can find it! You know? And I wondered how much of that is temperamental and how much of it is deliberately prefigurative? Or if it’s at all possible to unpick those two things.

Sophie: You just reminded me of the TikTok where the woman says, “I love soup. You mean to tell me you hid a little bit of food in a bunch of water? I’ll find it!!” I guess that is kind of me, isn’t it: with the desire for communism-in-everything.

It’s true, I can actually watch an episode of Love Island and be like, “Aha! the desire for communism.”

But I’m right, though.

Keiran: Yeah. No doubt.

She didn't need the help of the CIA or the deep state in taking over mainstream feminism, she had worked for a decade in the magazine trenches in various oddball capacities (my favorite: she was the third notable assistant to Harvey Kurtzman on Help! besides Gilliam and Crumb) and made conenctions

She was one of the few members of the ’60s student movement to take government money for anticommunist purposes knowingly. But don’t get me wrong, it is laughable, and intensely misogynist, to infer that this somehow means that either women’s liberation or Steinem herself was a CIA op. Steinem’s well-documented affection and respect for her short-term employer reveals precisely zero large-scale conspiracies embedded in the project of liberal American feminism. Rather, it just helps illustrate something that is far more depressing, actually: Steinem didn’t need central-intelligence handlers in order to voluntarily create a socialism-tinged counterrevolutionary movement architecture. For decades, without covert funding or formal mission, she always projected just enough radical credibility to be effective in nudging social movements away from class war and anticolonialism and toward peaceful electoralisms. Again, her being a true-believing social-democratic “humanist” was precisely what made it consequential, i.e., pacifying and diluting of certain forms of women’s rage, when she chose to prop up American imperialism, support Israeli settler colonialism, and normalize capitalism. Contra the kooky and/or campist conspiracists on the internet right now, she wasn’t defusing radicalism on purpose or as part of some kind of plot or plan. (But isn’t that worse?)

One thing that's noteworthy here is how Palestinians have to be women targeted "by armed men" in order to fit into feminism. We know (and I talk about this in my recent piece for The Key) that IOF women / female prison guards are often responsible for the horrors done to Palestinians of all genders
