Increasingly concerned re: people offloading vital cognitive processes by using GIF replies. Expressing snark with words is a core part of being human, don't let some GIF picker widget a startup preloaded with clips of mid range TV shows take that from you!

Early Wittgenstein is almost as sparse as the late Beckett. It strikes me as weird that super-sparse prose would get flagged by such a classifier as AI-generated given that LLMs are notoriously verbose.

An age ago I was an academic specialist in analytical philosophy, and while I’m grateful for the training in close reading and analysis that I got, it did have a weird fetish for “rigor” disguising the reality that the whole field is fundamentally no different from any other humanities practice.

There's a widespread dismissive attitude towards continental philosophy within AI-adjacent circles; in large part, it is motivated by what Mark Wilson called "imitation of rigor" in most of analytic philosophy -- sterile "theory T" thinking that does not engage with history or practice.

Jim Henson would have been 90 (yup, you read that right: NINETY) years old today. You can celebrate his life by celebrating creativity, diversity, peace, imagination, and silliness.

I dislike the gendering of cat ownership not only because it means fewer cats get adopted, but also because it makes it harder to find cat-themed menswear. Below are some I've come across over the years. Brands and descriptions are in the alt text. Also a mug at the end that I like.

Some of the longest words that can be written using musical notation include acceded, baggage, defaced, and feedbag. If you substituted H for B, you could add the words headache, beachhead, eggheaded, and deadheaded to this list. Rumor has it the longest word ever scored is 'cabbage-faced'.

Don’t let folks tell you Gen Z students can’t read. Kicked-off my Duke first-year class with this favorite Lydia Davis story - projected text onto a whiteboard so we could annotate by hand. So many smart and insightful readings, by a group of 18 year-olds in their first week of university life.
If you ask her what is a favorite story she has written, she will hesitate for a long time and then say it may be this story that she read in a book once: an English-language teacher in China asked his Chinese student to say what was the happiest moment in his life. The student hesitated for a long time. At last he smiled with embarrassment and said that his wife had once gone to Beijing and eaten duck there, and she often told him about it, and he would have to say the happiest moment of his life was her trip, and the eating of the duck.

-Lydia Davis, Happiest Moment
