So things happened! A senate candidate turns out to have as poor self-control as having a Nazi tattoo would suggest. Republicans pretend the Senate Majority Leader, in a coma, Is Just Fine. The US gives a shit about soccer now, in the worst possible way. And I got nice books in the mail today!
The three-book set of: How the Water Feels to the Fishes, by Dave Eggers; Hard to Admit and Harder to Escape, by Sarah Manguso; Minor Robberies, by Deb Olin Unferth.

Rare to read in a major US publication such a clear-eyed, unsparing perspective on US politics
The age of reasonable and ordinary politics had proved so effective that the liberals had joined the reactionaries in their enthusiasm for spying, lawfare, and ideological policework and had voted, via their representatives in the allegedly liberal party, to support bombing campaigns, dissident liquidations, and outright invasions of El Salvador, Libya, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Grenada, Libya again, Bolivia, Iran, Panama, the Philippines, Iraq, Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq again, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan again, Yemen, Iraq for a third time, Pakistan, Somalia again, Iraq for a fourth time, Syria, Yemen again, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Somalia again, Afghanistan again, Somalia again,
Yemen again, Venezuela, Ecuador, Gaza, and Iran (again).

“Ideological concessions” like universal childcare and rent freezes
Moderate House Democrats are warning they're prepared for "war" if incoming progressives and democratic socialists try to hijack the House floor to secure ideological concessions.

Similar vibes:
A cartoon of a man and a woman. The man is holding a salami adorned with a fake nose and glasses and a sock for a hat. The woman is holding a pencil and is about to draw on the salami. Both have gruesome smiles on their faces.

I CAN’T. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

- WHAT?

SOMEONE IS *WRONG* ON THE INTERNET.

It's pretty easy to talk about affordability WHILE acknowledging the reality of what people are experiencing every day.
An email from Alexandria Ocasio Cortez reads:

Republicans forgot that people voted to lower their costs and to improve their economic outlook — and this administration is doing everything but that.

They are sending ICE into the streets.
They are invading other countries.
They are tweeting crazy sh*t.

But what they’re not doing is lowering the price of groceries.
What they’re not doing is raising people’s wages.
What they’re not doing is creating jobs, because we’re having horrible unemployment numbers, especially for young people.

“Hey don’t you want a burger right now? Buy one for $100,000, get the second one free!”
OpenAl is exploring a range of revenue-generating initiatives to change its fortunes, including in-line ads within ChatGPT. Although a lot of it revolves around replacing human workers with Al, particularly in hospitality and customer service sectors. It would be theoretically far cheaper for very large companies to replace their human workers with ChatGPT, even if those contracts cost millions. That is, if it can provide customers with a satisfactory experience. Gartner previously projected that many companies turning to Al to replace workers are already reversing course. But I digress.

I think about this kicker a lot.
Those who haven't anything in them to tell them what they like and what they don't-whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi. It's an amusing game. Try it at the next big party you go to.

Someone reported Hannah Arendt to the FBI and I am deeply envious of Mr X’s daughter
Mr. X advised he felt that Hannah Arendt was very dangerous to the best interests of this country in view of the fact she is a professor who travels around the United States instructing at numerous colleges as a visiting professor. He stated his daughter changed her thinking completely after taking courses from Hannah Arendt at the University of California, Berkeley, California, in 1955, and feels that it was her influence which had influenced his daughter to go to Europe to study under Professor Paul Ricoeur.

The FBI determined that the nonspecific complaint did not warrant an active investigation.

Virtual Babelfish would be a fantastic application of AI: www.macrumors.com/2025/08/25/a...
One rumor claims ‌AirPods Pro‌ 3 will partner with the iPhone's Translate app to deliver real‑time conversation translation directly through the earbuds. Imagine an English speaker hearing an instant English rendition of a Spanish counterpart's words (and vice versa) without fumbling with handheld devices. Implementation details are still thin, but the idea fits in with Apple's broader AI push.

Come for the outrageous clickbait headline, stay for the Nabokovian Easter egg
"You're a pal," Jeffrey would tell me. I wondered if I really was a pal. I spent so little time understanding what he had to say, and so much time lost in my own world, thinking about William McKinley and wondering what tariffs were. Tariffs-what a beautiful sound that word has. Tariff: the tip of the tongue taking a trip from the glorious Ta to the explosion of riff!

Are you as lazy as people say you are?

It’s very difficult to be very lazy. It takes a lot of imagination to do nothing and you have to be sufficiently self-confident not to have a bad conscience. You have to have a taste for life, so that every minute is complete in itself and so you don’t have to keep saying “I’ve done this or that.” You need strong nerves to do nothing. Being lazy also means that other people’s opinions don’t matter. Nor does the idea of always having to prove yourself.
