When the Singing Stone was first displayed at the Museum, the massive block of vibrant blue azurite and green malachite made high-pitched sounds when the humidity changed with the weather and seasons. These noises were produced as the porous stone absorbed and released moisture from the air.

Supercomputers being delivered around Apollo's first moon landing could do ~10 million numerical operations per second. IBM and CDC were the big players, and they each sold ~ 100 units globally. So all of Earth's supercomputers could manage maybe 2 billion ops/s. IPhone 17 exceeds 2 trillion ops/s.

We had a good time planting and installing several floating wetlands islands at FIU Biscayne Campus. These islands planted with grasses, native flowers, and mangroves should help pull nutrient pollution out of the water and provide habitat for birds and fish. Looking forward to seeing them grow.

Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.
Onfim’s drawing of himself on horseback as a warrior defeating an enemy. Two of Onfim’s works. On the left is a copy of a passage from the Book of Psalms he did for schoolwork. On the right is an apparently autobiographical depiction of a monster labeled with “I am a wild beast.”Some more spelling practice by Onfim with some human figures who have round heads and varying numbers of fingers on their big hands.Onfim’s writing practice accompanied by 7 little people in his particular drawing style, who tend to have very big hands with many fingers.

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell c. 500,000-300,000 years ago! The shell’s central display has been described as an example of aesthetic intention by the toolmaker. West Tofts, Norfolk. 📷 MAA Cambridge University #Archaeology
The photo shows an Acheulean biface handaxe knapped from dark grey flint with a creamy-white cortical layer, shown against a black background. The handaxe is roughly tear-drop shaped with a pointed tip and rounded bottom. There is a fossil shell centrally displayed on one face, identified as the Cretaceous bivalve mollusc Spondylus spinosus. Above the shell to the right is a small rectangular museum label. The toolmaker has knapped the flint in such a way as to retain the shell in a central position. Measurements 79mm x 35mm x 132mm Weight 0.375kg. I love summer, and I hate the change of seasons. But eels change in excellent ways, so let's talk about that, instead! That's right, friends...it's Big Eel Life Cycle Thread time! Before we start, let's remember that I'm a historian, not a scientist. But I'll do my best. 1/11 🗃️🧪
Meme. Drawing of the eels' life cycle, surrounding a map of their migration range, centered on the mid-Atlantic. The drawing shows the evolution cycle:
1. Silver eels spawing
2. Eggs
3. Larval stage
4. Glass eel
5. Elvers
6. Yellow eel
7. Silver eel

The inconsistency in singular/plural drives me a little crazy, because it suggests that eels shift from being multiple animals to one animal and back several times over their lives. Which is silly. Nobody does that. Not even my neighbor, Jim.

Meme text reads:
"There's history in here somewhere"
