Feels like shifting gears in recent weeks: GOP is toast and there's a preemptive upswing in left and maybe libertarians of "don't you dare say the D's are any better. Also they cannot be pushed to get better"

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

From 16,000 to 185 to Zero. The Trump admin claimed as many as 16,000 noncitizens had been registered to vote in Nevada. Then DHS came back and said the number was actually 185. This week, Nevada told the admin every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.

Killer part is how we got a bunch of reporting on how the Dems from the Obama administration had “learned their lesson” from this only to see the pivot to “we’re going to pass the toughest border bill” again in 2024.

Reform was actually close but the "unaccompanied minors border crisis" gave Rubio ++ the comfortable-for-them offramp to pander to xenophobes. Whether they'd have signed on in the end without border panic who knows, but we're sure left with the awful consequences of "security" now/reform later

A clip from the NYT that reads: “Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week. Those do not seem like comparable series! You don't need a complex explanation for why "good/excellent" responses are rarer and more variable than "ok/comfortable"

acm92116.bsky.social @acm92116.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
If people are confused why "I'm doing ok/comfortable" is high and stable while "the economy is good/excellent" is much lower and variable, I humbly suggest that one of those categories is equivalent to "C or better" and one is "B+ or better." No mystery that the latter captures many fewer people!

The NYT says today’s #NoKings protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.) But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.
The marches had no shortage of skeptics.
In Oxford, Miss,, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the No Kings protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Mr. Trump was acting like a king.
"He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the electoral college in a landslide," Mr. Rutledge said.
"And so I'm a little bit confused on how he's acting differently than any other president."
He pointed to the stalemate in Congress over the SAVE America Act, the Republican-driven bill to tighten voter identification and registration rules, which Democrats have called an attempt to suppress turnout based on false claims of voting fraud. Mr. Rutledge said that Mr.
Trump was "going through the process" to try to get the legislation passed.olemiss.collegerepublicans • Follow The University of Mississippi - Ole Miss

In fairness it’s not like the consequences of having a mad king unilaterally take the country to war on a whim were so incredibly obvious that you could see it coming from the 18th and 19th centuries www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
“Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object,” a young representative named Abraham Lincoln wrote in 1848. This was “understood to be the most oppressive of all Kingly oppressions and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us.” This quote, incidentally, is immortalized on the House’s website, if any members of Congress are looking for it.
