There hasn’t been a bigger smash on TV recently than HEATED RIVALRY, created by two people with chronic illnesses, Rachel Reid and Jacob Tierney. There is also a push right now to get you to believe that people with chronic illnesses are useless drains on society. Which table sounds more fun?

Defunding scientists for the nationality of who they co-author with or who they train. One of the most radical attack on freedom of speech in US history. A far right nationalist destruction of US science. Such a shameful time to be an American that this racist stupidity has become mainstream.

Hi! Epidemiologist here!
Don't do this.
In the 80s and 90s this was done by Depts. of Health during the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
"Somehow" the lists they created found their way into the hands of cops, landlords, & job sites to deny people human rights.
It's partly WHY the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act exists

Yes, I know, it's frustrating that some people will only care about the loss of DEIA programs that hit white people. But also it is important to highlight how diversity programs *are, in fact, already* aiming to help the people anti-DEIA grifters claim at the expense of and thus cuts will benefit.

For non-scientists: the funding rate is somewhere between 7% to ~25% (rare) for NIH or NSF grants, depending on where you are applying. Grants are reviewed by a panel of peers who read the grants, score them, then debate the ratings for 1-2 days to rank them. It is INCREDIBLY competitive already.

(3/5) At 7:59 AM this morning, Bhattacharya and RFK Jr. both received the email with the scathing Bethesda Declaration attached. 300+ NIH employees are calling out leadership for putting: ❌ Politics before lives ❌ Loyalty before science ❌ Ideology before the American people This is unprecedented.
A protest scene in front of NIH headquarters, with people holding signs like “Brains Love Science” and “My Kid’s Careers Require Science.” Text emphasizes that the Bethesda Declaration was sent to RFK Jr. and Bhattacharya and outlines the NIH employees’ accusations against leadership.

something that stands out about this is just how cheap it is for us to have world-leading scientific capacity we spent ~6.75 trillion last year, and the combined budgets for NIH, NSF and NASA are barely more than 1% of that what an incredible waste to lose it all for a drop in the bucket

The data tells us that everyone can benefit from getting updated Covid vaccines. Covid vaccines reduce the risk of becoming sick, developing Long Covid, and becoming hospitalized, for everyone.
The data below describe how well vaccines work to reduce your risk. This risk reduction is in addition to protection you may have from previous infections with COVID-19 or from receiving earlier versions of COVID-19 vaccines.

COVID-19 vaccines:

Reduce your risk for critical illness (admission to intensive care unit or death)
For adults ages 18 and older, the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccines reduced the risk of critical illness from COVID-19 by almost 70% in the first 2 months after vaccination. Protection decreased over time. During the 10 months after vaccination, the vaccines reduced critical illness risk by about 50%.6
Reduce your risk of being hospitalized
For adults ages 18 and older, the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccines reduced the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization by about 50% in the first 2 months after vaccination. Protection decreased over time. During the 10 months after vaccination, the vaccines reduced hospitalization risk by about 30%.67
Reduce your risk of getting sick and needing to go to urgent care or the emergency department
For adults ages 18 and older, the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccines reduced the risk of COVID-19 urgent care and emergency department visits by about 50% in the first 2 months after vaccination. Protection decreased over time, with little protection remaining at 4–6 months.67
Reduce your risk for Long COVID
Studies show that people who got vaccinated against COVID-19 and later get COVID-19 are less likely to have Long COVID, compared to people who are unvaccinated or not up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.89
