Clean air should be a right. It's not. The most vulnerable among us deserve access to the world. Nearly 7 years of isolation is too many. Layers of mitigation protect us all, which is why we emphasize masking and air purifiers. Be kind, build community. Disability is a minority anyone can join.

Extreme wildfire smoke hits US and Canada. Here's our tiny California wildfire smoke org's advice from 9 years of watching and responding. (slides 1-4 of 8) #wildfiresmoke #canadawildfires #airquality #NewYork #Chicago #Toronto
Mask Oakland on Crisis:
US + Canada Wildfire Smoke
JULY 16, 2026

During West Coast Wildfires since 2017, Mask Oakland has distributed over 500k N95 and KN95 masks to vulnerable communities in the Bay Area and beyond. The current smoke levels in many Northeast US cities have passed 400 AQI (below 50 is normal), reaching hazardous, catastrophic levels. Even through major wildfire seasons, most have never experienced 400+ AQI, except if they were living down the road from a major wildfire. This is likely the worst smoke event in North American History in terms of severity and population affected.

Most people and governments are under-informed on how dangerous this is. You may want to help. Here is some advice.
@maskoakland 1 of 8, July 2026N95 Masking helps protect against smoke,
staying inside helps, air purifiers help

AQI 150 is unhealthy, you should wear the best mask you can when outdoors.

Which mask? P100 > N95, KN95 > Surgical Mask > Cloth > No mask

Wildfire smoke negatively effects everyone, even if you consider yourself healthy or that it doesn’t bother you much. It is full of toxic junk, including PM 2.5, tiny particles so small your lungs cannot filter them. Those particles then enter your blood stream and essentially scratch up your circulatory system and your organs.

It is very unlikely to be lethal in small or moderate exposure, but each exposure very slightly reduces your long-term lifespan and quality of life. Over time this can add up to significant impact. Hospitalizations do increase during wildfire smoke events. Check on people you know with respiratory challenges.

Indoor air quality is better than outside, during wildfire crisis, but is not perfectly safe. Close windows, use air purifiers, and mask if you sense levels rising indoors.

Driving is an exposure risk, web search the model of your car and see if it has a cabin air filter, older cars may not. After going outside in smoke, change your clothes and shower, and bag up your dirty clothes.

@maskoakland 2 of 8, July 2026Track the smoke / AQI levels in your area.

Levels can change quickly and you want to be informed

Media recommends airnow.gov, but it updates using longer and wider averages versus the below which focus more on individual sensors that update every few minutes.

We recommend these apps:
       IQ Air / AirVisual
WatchDuty, and PurpleAir.

But also take breaks from monitoring, or delegate one person in your family or circle or organization to monitor to reduce fatigue from constant tracking.

@maskaoakland 3 of 8 July 2026For very high AQI (300+), start combining strategies, just masking is not enough

The worse it gets the more important it is to combine smoke mitigation strategies. At the highest levels: Masking + Indoors + Air Purifiers + Windows Closed + Reduced exertion.

Every 50-100 AQI above demands new level of response, by 400+, 500+, 600+ we are talking catastrophic levels where even the percentage that gets through your masks filter is not a healthy amount to be taking in.

We’ve helped community members on the frontlines of fires, and when the air is at 600 for an extended period, they end up with significant cognitive impacts, even when huddled on the ground next to their air purifier and wearing a mask as much as they can tolerate.

If you monitor air quality and see somewhere you can drive to that’s below 50, and you are in say, 500, it would offer significant health benefits to even temporarily travel to a “green” air quality area.

i cannot implore you enough to use respiratory protection that *really works* for what you’re facing. yes, the best mask is the mask you’ll wear, but when conditions are this bad, know that not all tools are created equal. if you can access something better and are able to wear it, it’s worth it.
4.9 - The Masks Explained
Underneath the title it says:
Below is a visual side-by-side comparison of each mask.
Efficacy is always dependent on a good fit and seal.
The results of the chart are as follows:
KN95: filters 95% of particulate matter, filters exhalation, easier to breathe in.
N95: filters 95% of particulate matter, filters exhalation, easier to breathe in.
Disposable P100: N95: filters 99.97% of particulate matter.
Reusable P100s with 60926 filters: filters 99.97% of particulate matter, filters gases and vapors.
Reusable P100s with 60926 filters and 604 exhalation filters: filters 99.97% of particulate matter, filters gases and vapors, filters exhalation.

It's important to know that false negatives on home COVID-19 tests are common, so if you're not feeling well and get a negative result, you should always test again! But although false negatives happen, it's still important to get tested if possible so you can get the treatment you need!
Two things that are both true: It is still important to test for COVID-19. False negatives on at-home COVID-19 tests* are common. *Also called home tests, rapid tests, antigen tests, and rapid antigen testsFalse negatives on COVID-19 tests are common, so it’s important to test again if your test is negative. False negatives (test results saying you don’t have COVID when you actually do) are common. If you have symptoms but test negative, test again at least one more time, 48 hours later.

If you test positive, there’s no need to test again. False positives (tests saying you have COVID when actually don’t) are extremely rare.It is still important to test so you can get the treatment you need. COVID-19 treatments are available for some people who are eligible, and they can significantly reduce your risk of hospitalization and death.

Testing helps you to identify your illness so you can get the treatment you need!If you’re sick but can’t test (or retest): Get plenty of rest, avoid spreading it to others, and talk to your doctor if needed. If you’re feeling sick but don’t have access to testing, it’s still important to give your body time to get better, and avoid spreading illness to others. Stay home as much as you’re able & get plenty of rest to allow your body to a chance to fully recover.

Avoid others as much as possible (and remember, nobody wants illness spread to them even if it’s not COVID-19), and wear a mask if you have to be around others.

info from Newlevant COVID Zine and Ontario Health Canada
Improve test accuracy by collecting a combinec nose and throat sample!"
1. Do not eat, smoke or drink anything 30 minutes before taking a rapid antigen test.
2. Blow your nose first and cough.
Disinfect hands (wash or sanitizer)
3. Insert swab to the inner cheek, turn and/or
swab a few times or
4. Softly rub the swab as far back in your throat as you feel comfortable.
5. Tilt head back and fully insert the soft swab tip straight back (not up) into your nose until you hit resistance (up to 2.5 cm). Rotate swab several times against the wall
then
of the nose and let sit for a few seconds to absorb nasal secretions.
Do this for both nostrils.
6. Follow your RAT instructions to process the sample and read results
Try not to move the cassette. Read results promptly in bright light - sometimes a positive test will show up in very faint lines. If you're in the US, submit your results to MakeMyTestCount.org. *Do not use this method with Intelliswab RATs, it will produce false positives

COVID isn’t acting like the viruses most of us grew up with, and treating it like “just a cold” is putting people at real risk. David Brasure breaks down why SARS-CoV-2 is fundamentally different, how it causes long-term damage, and what we can do to protect ourselves.
Minimalist white poster with a subtle crumpled-paper texture; small ‘whn.global’ logo centered at the top. A small intro line sits above a huge headline where ‘COVID’ is bright red and ‘is different.’ is black.

COVID is different.
SARS-CoV-2 behaves differently from the viruses most of us grew up with. And treating it like “another flu” is costing people their health.’
Footer: The World Health Network is a network devoted to global compassion—working together to inspire collective action through science for a safer, healthier world.Same white, paper-texture poster and top ‘whn.global’ logo. Text: ‘Paraphrased from David Brasure’s WHN blog post, “COVID Is Different.” Read the full article at whn.global/covid-is-different.
What makes COVID different?
• It can breach the blood–brain barrier
• It can damage your endothelial lining and increase clot risk
• It can persist in tissues
• It can lower key immune cells
• It may increase cancer risk
• You can catch it multiple times per year
These are not “normal cold virus” behaviors.’
Footer line about the World Health Network.Same clean white poster with paper texture; ‘whn.global’ at top. Big statement line mid-page where ‘Long COVID’ appears in red and the rest in black; two short paragraphs below.

Long COVID is caused by SARS-CoV-2.
Persistent symptoms come from real, documented damage. Not anxiety, not imagination, not “just needing rest.” Hundreds of thousands of studies show SARS-CoV-2 affects the body in ways we’re still uncovering.
Just because you’ve had multiple infections and “felt fine” doesn’t mean it will stay that way.’
Footer line about the World Health Network.Same minimalist white, paper-texture layout with ‘whn.global’ at top. A large heading ‘Here’s what you can do.’ sits above a simple bullet list; the final URL slug ‘covid-is-different’ is in red.

Here’s what you can do.
• Improve air quality (filters, ventilation)
• Wear a high-filtration mask in shared indoor air
• Test when exposed or symptomatic
• Stay home when sick
• Use layered protections with friends, family, and workplaces

a mask is the thing you’re looking for. it is the visible reminder of how things have changed, that you acknowledge we are not coveted “normal” times—but unlike donation-earned tote bags or symbolic beaded bracelets, the mask is community care in both form & immediate function.

Mask up, protect and care for one another. We will not abandon each other.

Every week someone tells me they had to put Covid aside to focus on bigger issues like fascism. The thing is, eugenics and fascism go hand in hand. Historically pandemics have ignited fascism & normalized eugenics & indifference

it would be so awesome if yall didn’t only wear masks at explicitly political actions and instead saw your choice to wear a mask in, at the very least, public indoor spaces at the political action it is: one in direct opposition to the eugenic policies we’re being forced to live under.

further, there have been reports if not videos of agents of the state cruelly removing people’s medical masks in public spaces, if not making arrests— this would be a lot harder if they’d been surrounded by a sea of masked faces, so normalize using these lifesaving tools in your daily life. mask up.
