Happy Kalends of #October! 🍂 From the Latin octo, “eight” — October was the 8th month in the earliest Roman calendar. Even after the calendar expanded to 12 months, it kept its name & its 31 days. October marked the close of the military & farming seasons & was under the protection of Mars. ⚔️🌾

It's September & a common Labour of the Month was crushing grapes. This image shows some of the steps from bringing them in, in baskets, pouring them in to be crushed, the tired looking men stomping & finally the grape juice flowing out into a container on the floor. Image credit in ALT #Medievalsky
A man enters on the left with a wicker basket on his back. He is wearing shoes and white leggings up to the knees. A similarly dressed man but in blue bends over so the grapes go over his head into the large vat.He holds a stick he can lean on as he bends over. One of the men stomping grapes in the vat is helping to get the grapes out of the basket.. We cannot see his feet but it is presumed he is barefoot. There are grape stains on his legs and those of the other man in the vat who is clearly stomping. A small container in front of the vat is filling with juice from a small hole at the bottom of the vat. Image from Bibliothèque de Genève, Ms. lat. 33, f. 9r

In 1663, Pepys was still using the old (Julian) calendar so the date of the summer solstice is off by 11 days. England switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. The longest day of 2026 in the Gregorian calendar will be June 21st. In 1663 it was June 11th (Julian) and June 22nd (Gregorian).
