Tunnel boring machines do a lot more than just dig. They are underground factories that drill through the earth and build the tunnel tubes, positioning pre-cast concrete segments to form rings that lock together to make the tunnel lining. Who would have guessed that boring could be so interesting?

Is this the second time this week a conductor has failed to see a person or animal being dragged by a train? Yikes.

The dog carrier rules in the subway - which should be enforced - are for the safety of other passengers and the animals. They're not just suggestions for a reason. bsky.app/profile/magi...

Here's a statement: James Dolan should not be denying people entrance to MSG or Radio City Music Hall or the Beacon Theater because they have written mean tweets about him or work for lawfirms that have sued him or MSG Entertainment.

You have to play political hardball with the guy funding a campaign against you, and in this case, that political hardball is both legal and part of a common-sense public policy proposal.

The Penn Station/MSG conundrum is something I wrote about back in 2013: secondavenuesagas.com/2013/03/28/s... Here's The Athletic in 2019 writing about MSG's property tax exemption, which had a lifetime value of over $500 million 8 years ago www.nytimes.com/athletic/875...

I would say that the admirable public policy goals of revoking MSG's tax giveaways as a point of leverage against Dolan's MSG surveillance state or improving Penn Station passenger flow and operations is hardly akin to what Trump does.

Just imagining a future where the day after he reelection, Kathy Hochul calls Dolan and tells him either he's being 40 years of backtaxes or we're bulldozing the Garden for a new Penn Station and there's nothing to do to stop it.

Do you know that Democratic politicians in the State of New York could make life very very uncomfortable for James Dolan by actually using the levers of controls they have over MSG's tax status and future? And yet! bsky.app/profile/noah...

"Zero of those people have been killed by e-bikes or e-scooters,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “Yet here we are at a hearing [on] 21 bills aimed at regulating e-bikes and e-scooters. None are about regulating dangerous driving and only two are about infrastructure.”

DOT realizing it is up to them to determine how street space allocated rather than up to some 78 year old person who drives everywhere despite living 40 feet from the Borough Hall subway stop is a good development.

Timeline context: DOT first announced plans for this sidewalk extension in 2017. The paint-on-asphalt approach is great for a quick implementation, but after 9 years, this should be a permanent part of the sidewalk, not still just paint on asphalt.

Second Ave. Sagas @2avesag.as · 30/09/2026
For instance, this is a bad design. You've taken up half of the painted sidewalk extension space with planters because it's the only way the city can think of to keep drivers from taking up pedestrian space. Just build out the concrete sidewalk!
A streetview screenshot of 35th St and 7th Ave showing giant planters blocking the space that's supposed to be for pedestrians.

Second Ave. Sagas @2avesag.as · 30/09/2026
That's the other key. This area in midtown needs more pedestrian space and wider sidewalks generally. Plopping more things in the way defeats one of the purpose of restricting car access. I'd pair a carnival ride in the plaza with built-up wider sidewalks along 7th and 8th Aves (and not planters)

That's what I was trying to figure out. It's a tight fit with the angle of the roads where Broadway and 6th Ave. cross, and no one is bulldozing the green spaces for this.

Second Ave. Sagas @2avesag.as · 30/09/2026
One thing I'd like to see is permanent treatment. The part closed to cars is still just paint on a roadbed. It should be graded evenly and made to look and feel like the pedestrian space in Times Square rather than a repurposed roadbed. We certainly can do that after years of not allowing cars.

The RFP is for the concessions for the entire plaza (including responsibility for seating). I'm curious how the rides would go. The little carousels in plazas at a number of Paris Metro stops are very cute and very popular with the kiddos. PDF: 34thstreet.org/assets/uploa...

This is also a safety issue that is fully addressed with platform edge doors. How many unnecessary and avoidable deaths will we tolerate before we get an actually serious attempt to wall off platform edges?

It's particularly bad that they constantly delay updates on items by months at a time. The last signals update was due in spring, but was delayed with no real reason given. The last update discussed how far they had fallen behind and what they were doing to fix it. They should give an update!

This has been my personal issue for a while - though it's become more evident since I stopped blogging. Once-per-year updates on Penn Station Access or 2nd Ave. or OMNY or a multi-billion-dollar rolling stock plan just should not be acceptable, and Albany should do its own regular oversight here too

Second Ave. Sagas @2avesag.as · 28/09/2026
I realize construction timelines are on years, rather than months, but getting 1x annual assessments of these items while Albany has essentially punted on *any* MTA oversight seems like bad governance to me. The public is owed more transparency than this.

Janno Lieber likes to blame Mamdani’s free bus campaign and Covid for muddying the waters and worsening bus fare evasion. Meanwhile, Lieber’s own buses are confusing riders in multiple ways (this bus is not going to Court Sq!) by flashing a “FARE REQUIRED” message on a free subway replacement bus
