The Hudson River Ground Stabilization project is mixing concrete into the Hudson riverbed to make the ground firm enough for our tunnel boring machines to dig through. This takes a lot concrete mix. 208,000 cubic yards, to be exact. That’s enough concrete to build a sidewalk from NYC to Chicago!

Building each of the new tunnel tubes under the Hudson River requires more than 2.3 miles of tunnel boring. That’s a total of almost five miles for both tubes – longer than 90 north/south blocks in Manhattan!

We’re building floodwalls around the tops of the access shafts in Weehawken and Manhattan to prevent stormwater runoff from flowing into them. This is a big project – each shaft is roughly 400 feet around!

In the 1800s, dirt and rubble were used to extend Manhattan’s shoreline. To prepare for tunnel boring through this fill, we’re installing pipes in Hudson River Park that will circulate cold brine underground, freezing the loose material into a solid block that is easier to tunnel through.

While the tunnel boring machines are assembled, crews are building access shafts in NY and NJ that will enable workers on the surface to support construction deep underground. Workers are currently installing the cap beams around the top of the shaft walls. Next step: excavation.

The walls of the new tunnel tubes will be made of thousands of interlocking concrete segments. The segments for the section of the tunnel under the Palisades in New Jersey are being manufactured now at a factory in Connecticut. Completed segments will start shipping to New Jersey soon!

🚧Construction Update🚧 The HYCC-3 Project has entered a new phase: adding the roof to the tunnel box. We do this by filling the tunnel with sand and pouring concrete over it, then removing the sand once the concrete hardens. The end result: a fully enclosed box trains can travel through.
