I'm delighted by the Yankees' 16-hitter wild card roster. If you have enough position players with even one big league quality skill you have to be nuts to take more than 10 or 11 pitchers to a best-of-three series

Everybody Except the Yankees Is Doing Wild Card Roster Construction Wrong
Only Cashman and Boone are bold enough to design a roster fit for a best-of-three series, rather than a best-of-162.

Out of everything I've read, this has the most straightforward explanation of Manchester City's cheating. On one level, I get the rules are in place to prevent important local institutions from going bankrupt, but also my American brain struggles with "they have the money why can't they spend it".

One of the most underappreciated unforeseen consequences of the smartphone/streaming/social media era is the elimination of boredom as a key driver of creativity. Without boredom, there just isn't enough impetus for most people do go out and learn and do things.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I'm old enough to see this incident as another in a long line of "Please proceed, Governor" moments in which Republicans addled by the right wing media bubble get their shit wrecked trying to play their usual hits in a reality-based environment.

what percentage of americans are ever in a frat? I never went to a college with them and I've never heard "there are a few bad ones but the institution is important" from a politician, which is an impressive level of untouchability given every time they make news it's something stupid or monstrous

My spouse, a career educator, sees 10 seconds of documentary footage showing a 7-year-old and says, "Oh, that kid is showing signs of ADHD." The very next shot is of the kid in his desk at school and the teacher is telling him, exasperatedly, to face forward. 🎯

Looking at league wide trends the 7.39 XBH/100 PA is the third lowest in the last 30 years behind 2013/2014 League wide wOBA was still up because players have gotten better at getting on base but it's a low point for two three and four baggers

Now that the regular season is over, I compiled the numbers. MLB teams used catchers for 18.3% of their DH starts, the highest percentage for a season that I've found. 16 teams gave more than 10% of their DH starts to C, a rate that would've led the league in many past seasons.

This map from 1951 shows how iron ore moved then along the Great Lakes, and almost nothing about this has changed in 75 years. To make steel, you need iron ore. To move iron ore significant distances, you need deep draft waterways. You simply can not get the stuff to fucking *Iowa*

It may be the end of civilization but that will be up to others, hopefully in future generations. This is also an opportunity to remind folks that "the most popular song in the country" has always been contested, subject to different measures, etc. EG, No Doubt's "Don't Speak" was the most-played radio song for 16 wks, but did NOT appear on the Hot 100 b/c there was no physical single in the US.

The thing about a list like this is that there are probably like 15 TV shows I could see a reasonable committee picking as "The Best" and they're all here. My personal list would look different — The Americans at No. 1, Game Changer, Bluey, and Blue Eye Samurai somewhere — so whatever.

It's good for neighborhoods when people are in the streets.
Lots of people walking by vendor stalls on a San Francisco Street. Not a cloud in the sky and everyone is happy.

This this this. A thing pro-AI ppl might want to grapple with is that even if these tools can do all the things, the people who will wield them best will be the ones who understand the concepts and processes best. To be extreme, I suspect you can't engineer a skyscraper before engineering a stool.

Opportunity to share my favorite-ever "keys to the game" which came from Fox TV's "Man vs. Beast" in 2003. A pro sprinter raced a zebra and the graphic said the keys to winning for the man were to get a clean start and for the zebra to stay focused and realize that it's in a race.
Still from the TV show. The zebra is being led to the starting gate. Superimposed over it is a bulky graphic headed Keys To Victory.

MAN: Good clean start

BEAST: Stay focused. Realize it's a race.

Have fallen down a wiki rabbit hole and came across a band (band?) that has released musical pieces meant to last some septillion years, and it's very funny to me that in the middle of all this, the editors have let stand the note that they "took a long hiatus" of 13 years. 13! HA!
