This reminds of how younger me was blown away that the 1987 Cardinals used a total of 8 pitchers in a 7-game NLCS. They didn't do an Andrew Miller-esque relief ace pitching every game, and no pitcher started more than twice. For a 3-game series, OF COURSE you should only have 8-10 pitchers!

I'm delighted by the Yankees' 16-hitter wild card roster. If you have enough position players with even one big league quality skill you have to be nuts to take more than 10 or 11 pitchers to a best-of-three series

Everybody Except the Yankees Is Doing Wild Card Roster Construction Wrong
Only Cashman and Boone are bold enough to design a roster fit for a best-of-three series, rather than a best-of-162.

Out of everything I've read, this has the most straightforward explanation of Manchester City's cheating. On one level, I get the rules are in place to prevent important local institutions from going bankrupt, but also my American brain struggles with "they have the money why can't they spend it".

One of the most underappreciated unforeseen consequences of the smartphone/streaming/social media era is the elimination of boredom as a key driver of creativity. Without boredom, there just isn't enough impetus for most people do go out and learn and do things.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I'm old enough to see this incident as another in a long line of "Please proceed, Governor" moments in which Republicans addled by the right wing media bubble get their shit wrecked trying to play their usual hits in a reality-based environment.

Not for nothing, but Curry scored 60 in that game, and the Hawks still won. That would be a pretty memorable game to attend!

Also, I think pop culture presents them largely as the leadership wishes them to be seen, but the proper framing for the white frats and sororities at least is as sanctioned enforcement of socioeconomic strata.

From 2023: 7% of men and 6% of women report being in a fraternity or sorority. I assume the ones I interacted with at NYU were different from most other places given that the closest they had to a frat house was getting a floor in a dorm building and the culture didn't venerate Greek life.

Americans are divided on the impact of college fraternities and sororities
Majorities of Americans believe that fraternities and sororities exclude potential members very or somewhat often based on candidates' popularity, physical appearance, and class background.

what percentage of americans are ever in a frat? I never went to a college with them and I've never heard "there are a few bad ones but the institution is important" from a politician, which is an impressive level of untouchability given every time they make news it's something stupid or monstrous

In comparison, MLB teams gave about 4% of DH starts to players who also played shortstop this year. That's inflated by Casey Schmitt's 23 DH starts even though he's barely a SS, starting only 3 games there in 2026. NYM was next-highest team with 17 starts to Baty, Bichette, Lindor, and Mauricio.

My spouse, a career educator, sees 10 seconds of documentary footage showing a 7-year-old and says, "Oh, that kid is showing signs of ADHD." The very next shot is of the kid in his desk at school and the teacher is telling him, exasperatedly, to face forward. 🎯

If the person who wrote that is who I think, they're retired! They don't commute for work! They're just don't want the city to do the fundamental things that would actually relieve traffic, which might include having a lot more housing and places for people to work in the Richmond and Sunset 🙃

Now that the regular season is over, I compiled the numbers. MLB teams used catchers for 18.3% of their DH starts, the highest percentage for a season that I've found. 16 teams gave more than 10% of their DH starts to C, a rate that would've led the league in many past seasons.
