It's good for neighborhoods when people are in the streets.
Lots of people walking by vendor stalls on a San Francisco Street. Not a cloud in the sky and everyone is happy.

Opportunity to share my favorite-ever "keys to the game" which came from Fox TV's "Man vs. Beast" in 2003. A pro sprinter raced a zebra and the graphic said the keys to winning for the man were to get a clean start and for the zebra to stay focused and realize that it's in a race.
Still from the TV show. The zebra is being led to the starting gate. Superimposed over it is a bulky graphic headed Keys To Victory.

MAN: Good clean start

BEAST: Stay focused. Realize it's a race.

The only person who has ever looked chill — perhaps even cool? — on a Segway is Boris Diaw, who used one to commute to the arena when he lived in CLT, and also used it while out with his dogs. xcancel.com/jon_bois/sta...

Lockjaw from the movie "One Battle After Another" getting shown into a shitty little office with glass walls. You can't see it from the still, but it overlooks a freeway, probably in El Paso. The day does not end well for Lockjaw.

Might be an Ozzie Award finalist, though I think the final Adell robbery of his trio would be the front-runner. Here's what I mean by Ozzie Award: blog.29sunset.com/2025/05/ai-e...
The elevator pitch: Perhaps you’re familiar with FIFA’s Puskás and Marta Awards. What if MLB had its own award for “most aesthetically significant” defensive play of the year?

It would be a formal recognition that baseball is beautiful, and athletic performance is more than just statistical results. Think of Derek Jeter’s flip, or Ramon Laureano’s catch and throw. Commenters on Craig’s newsletter also suggested past Ozzie nominees might have been Bartolo Colon’s behind-the-back toss, Mark Buehrle’s kick-save and glove-shovel, Byron Buxton’s warning track dive (this year!), and Gary Matthews, Jr.’s ridiculous center field robbery, among others.

Sometimes, it's a curse to be able to remember things. EG: the child and I began watching Scrubs recently, and I remembered that John C. McGinley was a member of the "Malibu Mob". The what? Behold... www.espn.com/blog/sportsc...
It kind of goes without saying that Chelios is the oldest player in the league. In fact, he has been for the past five seasons. But what gives Cheli such remarkable staying power? We had to know. So we took to the internets to find out. And we came back with a little theory that might just blow your hockey sweater off.

It’s the Malibu Mob. Apparently, Chelios is the Godfather of the Mob, which is simply a group of cosmopolitan elite who live in Malibu over the summer and just, like, bum around together. (Note: to them, “bumming around” includes taking batting practice at Comerica Park and hanging out in NHL luxury boxes. To each his own.)

Members include Chelios, of course, as well as John McEnroe, John Cusack, John C. McGinley (of “Office Space” and “Scrubs” fame), D.B. Sweeney (of “The Cutting Edge” fame), Kid Rock (of "Kid Rock" fame) and Tony Danza (naturally).

This is a distant cousin to my 50% serious question about whether thumb placement matters on throwing a fastball. Like, some dudes curl their thumbs and others don't. I could never throw with a curled thumb, and it can drive me bonkers trying to figure out if it matters.
Max Scherzer in a Blue Jays uniform, arm cocked as he delivers a pitch. His thumb is curled on the underside of the ball, with the inner side of the thumb touching the ball while the pointer and middle fingers are on top in a four-seam grip.Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a Dodgers uniform, arm cocked at about the same spot in the delivery as Scherzer's. His thumb is not curled under the ball, and instead the pad of the thumb is touching the underside of the ball with the pointer and middle fingers on top in a four-seam grip.

"The Long Game" by @leanderalphabet.bsky.social is incredible. You don't even need to be a soccer fan — just interested in the modern USA — to appreciate it. In particular, the sections about national team players' personal journeys are illuminating. One of the best sports books I've read in years.

Reading a book about Earl Weaver, and my eyebrows shot up at these descriptions of batter-to-batter betting in the middle of the 20th century.
Photo of text from an e-reader. Excerpt from "The Last Manager" by John W. Miller.

Text says:

...predictive algorithms as teams.

In the 1940s, bars, saloons, clubs, and hotels carried Western Union tickers that spit out scores. Newspapers printed odds and quoted bookmakers on big games. "You will see them everywhere if you know where to look 'finger' bettors, they are sometimes called in the trade," reported John Lardner in Newsweek in 1944. "The gentlemen occupy the same seats daily, and offer odds and take bets by hand signals on balls, strikes, hits, whether there will be a score that inning, etc. That payoff is outside the ballpark after the game." In 1949, casinos in Los Angeles offered "television baseball gambling." Croupiers stood in front of a televised ballgame singing out odds. "Will the batter fly out, strike out, single, knock the ball out of the park? Will the runner on second go on the next pitch? What will the next pitch be, ball or strike?"

St. Louis was a hotbed. Bookies in town handled $1.5 million a week in wagers on baseball. Uncle Bud and his associates at Sportsman's Park offered prop bets on pitch counts, runs, hits, and a dozen other categories. The Cardinals sometimes cracked down, under pressure from Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the baseball...
