Many have noted the progress of the Brazilian economy under the latest Lula administration. Inflation and a world high interest rate ate into those gains for almost all voters. The politics of a high inflation world still remain to be appreciated by analysts on both the left and right.

2) England is a rare exception. During the 2010s many other countries (including the other 3 UK nations) changed tack, experimenting with ideas like transferrable skills instead of focusing on tried-and-tested disciplines and methods. It looks like those experiments have failed.

Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

The workforce split between direct employees and contractors at Gold Fields' operations is a good proxy for the historic and current strength of trade unions in mining in those countries.
A horizontal bar chart titled "Gold Fields Workforce by Region (Employees and Contractors)" displaying data from a 2024 Report to Stakeholders. It breaks down the total workforce (divided into blue bars for employees and orange bars for contractors) across five countries: Ghana (7,112 total, 89% contractors), South Africa (5,266 total, 50% contractors), Australia (4,340 total, 56% contractors), Chile (3,417 total, 86% contractors), and Peru (2,116 total, 81% contractors).

Given the literal definition of deportation is removing a foreigner or noncitizen from the country, we - journalists, media orgs - should probably all stop referring to the ‘deportation’ of a 2 year old US citizen. It’s NOT a deportation. I’m not sure what it is. A kidnapping?
