Remittances are a huge & increasingly important financial flow. Remittances to LMICs are larger than FDI and ODA combined! But there's a data gap on bilateral remittance flows. To fill the gap, @mclem.org and I have updated the modelling done by the World Bank's remittances unit, now disbanded.

Remittances are increasingly important, but their information landscape has sadly only worsened in recent years: as a public good and for better policy, better data is sorely needed.

👇🧵🎯 Blue states/Democrats have also defunded public higher education for 50 years, & they parrot the same lazy, evidence-free, right-wing talking points about education as jobs training as red states/Republicans. They just do it without the authoritarianism. That must change. Maybe this is a start.

aeaweb.org
Difference-in-Differences with a Continuous Treatment
(Forthcoming Article) - This paper analyzes difference-in-differences designs with a continuous treatment. We show that treatment-on-the-treated-type parameters are identified under a parallel trends assumption analogous to the binary treatment case. However, comparing these parameters across treatments is challenging because parallel trends does not rule out selection bias. We discuss alternative, typically stronger, assumptions that eliminate selection bias. We further show that popular two-way fixed effects estimands admit multiple interpretations, depending on the underlying causal building block, all having important limitations as meaningful summaries of treatment effects. Finally, we introduce alternative estimation procedures that avoid these drawbacks and demonstrate them in an empirical application.

Many myths debunked in this paper. Paper finds that: -faculty partisanship has no effect on students -students ideologically sort into majors; majors don’t affect partisanship -faculty partisanship is uncorrelated with how left/rightwing course content is micah-baum.github.io/files/baum-e...
DO FACULTY AFFECT STUDENT PARTISANSHIP?*
Micah Y. Baum*
Joaquín Endara
Annaliese Paulson®
Abstract
We study whether Democratic college professors make their students more liberal. We link voter data to salary records from 33 state flagships and show that faculty skew Democratic, especially in the humanities and social sciences. We then use student transcripts from one flagship to estimate causal effects. Students become more liberal during college regardless of major and sort toward ideologically similar instructors. Exploiting plausibly random variation in when instructors teach courses, we find no effect of faculty partisanship on student partisanship. Text analysis shows exposure to liberal topics reflects student demand rather than instructor supply, leaving little room for indoctrination.
