Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

It feels genuinely ridiculous having to say this, but the point of art is to connect with another human. Someone thought of that painting or melodic line or scene or paragraph that is suddenly making you weep, and that means that they saw you and understood you without even meeting you.

Even in articles critical of AI we still see journalists carrying water for the industry by accepting their framing. Here we see it framed as a “misuse” of AI. Personally I don’t think there is a right way to use the misinformation automation machine.

AI is often described as a technology of the *future*, or a technology that *will* change everything. I think a large part of the value of this technology actually lies in its ability to cause people to uncritically extrapolate into the future rather than admit its current limitations.

Start paying attention to the framing of mainstream stories about the economy and you’ll notice how often they implicitly take the side of capital rather than workers. For instance, the news often uses the term “labor market” instead of “job market.” Turning this dynamic around is a useful exercise.

Neoclassical econ assumes rationality. The corollary of, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" is "you're rich, so you must be very smart!" Thus, people assume that if powerful, well-compensated CEOs insist that "AI is changing everything," well then, *AI must be changing everything*. 1/

Agency always traces back to the font of human decision-making at the entry point to any process, including automated ones. Layers of automation may obscure, but not obviate, agency

Ah yes, America’s three main political parties.
Meanwhile, negative public sentiment about AI has been building. Only around 30% of Democrats think America should accelerate AI innovation as fast as possible, compared with roughly half of Republicans and 77% of tech founders, according to a recent poll by researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley.
