This is an absolute travesty. Northwestern has, probably, the 2nd best library collection for African History/Studies in the USA (behind Yale and ahead of MSU, UCLA, etc). A self-inflicted wound that is absolutely, 100% unnecessary given the massive wealth of Northwestern--north of $15 billion.

There is not an alternative vision coming from above. The politicians and the bosses do not have a big idea about how to make things better, beyond time-traveling to 1999 (for Dems) or 1899 (for the GOP). That vision must be ours and it must be built brick by brick and imposed on them.

Really important point. "The anti-datacenter movement, in other words, isn’t just about the future of a novel technology. It’s about the future of democracy. It’s about who controls the economy and whether regular people have a say in the decisions that affect them."
A New York Times op-ed, for example, called the fight against datacenters a “myopic” “distraction” from the “real fight”. In truth, anti-datacenter organizing is the real fight, one centered on an industry choke point that people can reach out and touch. This brewing populist resistance isn’t just about limiting local development – it represents a critical new front in the fight against tech-enabled authoritarianism. Where else can people push back on job-eating algorithms, distorting deep fakes, and autonomous drone strikes?

In other words, AI resentment maps pretty directly to how precarious your job situation is. For Gen Z, this is the worst entry level job market in decades; no wonder they hate AI, which they are routinely told is the reason why there's no work.
